We Compared The Features of 112 Website Builders: Here's What We Found

Website builders have become universal on the surface, but not generous underneath. Responsive controls, SEO and marketing tools, and design freedom appear in every one of the 112 tools we studied, yet the strongest upgrade levers sit elsewhere. We built the dataset ourselves, classified every feature with a seven-label availability scheme, and ran the aggregates to figure out what actually matters if you are shipping your own Website Builder.

The dataset spans seven workflow families: AI-generated business website launch, agency client site management, creative portfolio or niche site launch, designer-led custom site production, general small-business website launch, landing page and micro-site publishing, and offline desktop site creation. For each tool we captured a comparable feature taxonomy and classified access to separate real packaging from marketing claims.

Summary

This study analyzes the feature landscape of 112 Website Builders captured from public feature and pricing information. The dataset covers AI-generated business website launch, agency client site management, creative portfolio or niche site launch, designer-led custom site production, general small-business website launch, landing page and micro-site publishing, and offline desktop site creation, with 12 feature categories classified by availability and access model.

Three feature groups are fully universal in Website Builders: responsive controls, SEO and marketing tools, and design freedom all appear in 100% of tools, which means a builder that omits any of them looks structurally incomplete.

Visual editing and template libraries are nearly universal as well, at 98.2% and 95.5% penetration respectively, which confirms that the basic creation surface is no longer a meaningful differentiator by itself.

AI generation is not yet a true baseline in Website Builders. It appears in 67 of 112 tools, or 59.8%, which means the market narrative has moved faster than full category adoption.

Client collaboration and white-label management is the rarest major feature, appearing in only 61 tools and absent in 51, which makes team-grade workflow one of the cleanest opportunity zones outside agency and designer-led products.

Ecommerce is widely available but aggressively monetized. It appears in 86 tools, yet 62.0% of classifiable implementations are paid only and 0% are free full, which makes it one of the safest paid upgrade candidates.

Client collaboration is the strongest paywall signal among present features. Among classifiable tools that include it, 76.0% make it paid only, which confirms that collaboration is treated as operational value rather than acquisition bait.

Code export and developer control is almost as premium as collaboration. It appears in 70 tools, but 64.4% of classifiable implementations are paid only and another 20.3% are restricted, which means control is usually sold, constrained, or both.

Small-business website builders and landing page builders are the clearest freemium segments. In both workflows, visual editing, templates, responsive controls, hosting, and design freedom are usually free limited, which sets the expected entry-level surface for new products.

Offline desktop builders invert the SaaS pattern. Code export and developer control appear in 12 of 12 offline tools, but many core capabilities are paid only because the category is often built around pay-once software rather than cloud freemium.

The clearest MVP baseline for Website Builders is not everything free. Basic visual editing, responsive design, templates, hosting, SEO, and design controls need to exist upfront, while ecommerce, collaboration, code export, vertical workflows, and advanced marketing can remain paid without looking unusual.

For each of the 112 Website Builders, we inspected public product information and recorded the availability of 12 feature categories: visual editing, template libraries, AI generation and writing, responsive controls, CMS and dynamic content, ecommerce and payments, SEO and marketing, hosting and domains, design freedom, client collaboration and white-label management, code export and developer control, and vertical workflows. Each feature was classified with one of seven standardized availability labels, and the full comparison table is below.

Which features are commoditized in Website Builders?

The commoditized features in Website Builders are responsive controls, SEO and marketing basics, design freedom, visual editing, and template libraries. The first three appear in 100% of tools, while visual editing and templates appear in 98.2% and 95.5% respectively.

The core website creation layer is no longer a place where presence alone creates advantage. A buyer expects to design pages visually, adapt layouts to mobile, start from templates, publish with basic hosting, and handle SEO basics as part of the ordinary product surface.

Responsive controls are the clearest table-stakes signal because all 112 tools include them. This holds across AI-generated builders, portfolio tools, designer-led systems, small-business builders, landing page tools, agency platforms, and offline desktop software.

SEO, analytics, and marketing tools are also universal, but their universality hides very different packaging. Among classifiable implementations, 50.5% are paid only, which means the feature is mandatory to have but not necessarily generous to use.

We define Website Builders as tools whose primary value proposition is to help users create, design, publish, host, manage, or update websites without building them fully from scratch, including personal sites, business sites, portfolios, ecommerce sites, blogs, and marketing websites. We exclude landing page builders, app builders, CMS platforms, no-code platforms, design tools, hosting providers, and ecommerce platforms unless website creation is a central advertised feature. For ambiguous tools, we include them only if users would reasonably choose the product primarily to build a website rather than an app, landing page, store, or content management system.

The dataset focuses on tools that are sufficiently comparable for pricing and feature availability analysis. Some highly niche, regional, legacy, or newly launched tools may not be included, but the sample is designed to represent the most visible, commercially meaningful, and strategically relevant products in the category rather than every marginal edge case.

The website builder category contains many overlapping features, often described with inconsistent terminology across vendors. To make the analysis readable and comparable, we grouped vendor-specific feature claims into 12 broader feature categories: visual editing, templates, AI generation, responsive controls, CMS and dynamic content, ecommerce and payments, SEO and marketing tools, hosting and domains, design freedom, collaboration and white-label management, developer control, and vertical workflows.

This grouping avoids two common problems: treating every vendor-specific wording as a separate feature, which would make the analysis too fragmented, and using overly broad buckets, which would hide meaningful differences between products. For example, individual claims around SSL, custom domains, hosting, speed, and CDN support were grouped into a broader hosting and infrastructure category, while claims around export, self-hosting, custom code, and developer workflows were grouped into developer control.

For each feature category, we applied a standardized availability label based on the information published by each vendor. Absent means the feature is not available, or does not appear to be available, based on public information. Free full means the feature is available for free without meaningful usage, access, or functionality limits. Free limited means the feature is available for free, but with usage, volume, branding, publishing, export, functionality, or access limits.

Paid only means the feature is available only through a paid plan, paid add-on, paid license, custom commercial package, or paid upgrade path. Trial only means the feature is available only during a free trial or temporary evaluation period. Restricted means the feature depends on a specific integration, region, device, partner, deployment mode, agency arrangement, beta program, or other restricted access condition. Unclear means the feature appears to be present, but public information does not clearly indicate whether it is free, paid, trial-based, limited, or restricted.

When public information was incomplete or ambiguous, we avoided inferring availability beyond what could reasonably be supported by the vendor’s own materials. In those cases, we used the Unclear label rather than assuming that a feature was free, paid, fully available, or unavailable.

For the quantitative analysis, feature coverage counts include tools where the feature is present, likely present, restricted, trial-based, paid, free, or unclear. However, access-model percentages are calculated only among classifiable cases, excluding unclear entries from the percentage denominator. This prevents ambiguous public information from distorting the share of tools that are free, limited, paid, trial-based, or restricted.

Where a vendor used pricing language that did not map cleanly to the standardized labels, we harmonized it conservatively. Custom-priced access to a feature was treated as paid access, because the feature is commercially gated rather than freely available by default.
