We Compared The Features of 117 App Builders: Here's What We Found

App builders give away the interface more often than they give away production. We analyzed 117 app builder, no-code, low-code, mobile app builder, ecommerce app builder, website-to-app, and AI prompt-to-app tools, built the dataset ourselves, and classified every feature with a seven-label availability scheme to find what actually matters when shipping your own app builder.
The dataset spans seven workflow families: AI prompt-to-app generation, data portals and internal tools, ecommerce mobile app building, enterprise low-code app development, full-stack web app building, native mobile app creation, and website-to-app conversion. For each tool we recorded the major app-building feature surface and classified availability to capture packaging rather than marketing claims.

Summary
This study analyzes the feature landscape of 117 app builders across AI prompt-to-app generation, data portals and internal tools, ecommerce mobile app building, enterprise low-code app development, full-stack web app building, native mobile app creation, and website-to-app conversion. The dataset captures 12 feature categories and classifies each implementation by availability status so the analysis reflects actual packaging, not just whether a vendor mentions a feature.
API integrations are effectively universal in app builders: 116 of 117 tools offer them in some form, which means API access is no longer a differentiator by itself.
Prebuilt templates are more common than visual builders, with 94% penetration versus 88%, which confirms that many app builders package starting points even when they do not offer a traditional drag-and-drop experience.
Website and WordPress app wrapping is the only feature below 50% adoption, present in just 16 of 117 tools, which means wrapping is a niche workflow rather than a general app-builder expectation.
Native iOS and Android publishing appears in 68% of tools, but only 6 of the 80 present implementations are free full or free limited, which makes production deployment one of the category's clearest paywalls.
Enterprise governance is surprisingly common at 91% penetration, but 72 of the 106 tools that offer it make it paid only, which confirms that governance is sold as a maturity feature rather than used as a free acquisition hook.
AI app generation is broad but not universal, appearing in 70% of the dataset, which means AI has become a mainstream app-builder capability without becoming table stakes for every workflow.
Ecommerce mobile app builders have the highest feature completeness at 87% of possible feature-cells present, but only 3% of their feature-cells are free-ish, which makes them the most complete and least generous workflow family.
Full-stack web app builders are the most generous category overall, with 34% of feature-cells free full or free limited, which means they are the clearest freemium-friendly workflow in the dataset.
AI prompt-to-app tools have the highest uncertainty, with 33% of feature-cells unclear, which suggests that AI-native app-builder packaging is moving faster than pricing and feature documentation.
Native mobile app creation tools are the most balanced between breadth and accessibility, with 81% feature presence and 21% free-ish feature-cells, which positions them between open-ended builders and tightly monetized ecommerce app platforms.

We built this dataset from scratch. For each of the 117 app builders, we inspected public feature information and recorded the availability of 12 feature categories: visual drag-and-drop building, templates and modules, native iOS and Android publishing, website and WordPress wrapping, ecommerce and checkout, push notifications and engagement, databases and connectors, workflow automation and backend logic, API integrations, AI app generation, custom code extensibility, and enterprise governance. Each feature was classified with one of seven standardized availability labels. The full comparison table is below.

Methodology
We analyzed 117 app builder, no-code, low-code, mobile app builder, ecommerce app builder, website-to-app, and AI prompt-to-app tools based on publicly available information from their homepages, feature pages, pricing pages, documentation, and product positioning.
We define app builders as tools whose primary value proposition is to help users create, design, develop, deploy, or manage software applications, including web apps, mobile apps, internal apps, SaaS apps, and custom business applications. We exclude website builders, landing page builders, low-code platforms, no-code platforms, form builders, database tools, and developer frameworks unless app creation is a central advertised feature. For ambiguous tools, we include them only if users would reasonably describe the product as an app builder rather than a website, workflow, database, or internal tool builder.
We excluded tools that were not sufficiently comparable for pricing and feature analysis, including generic CMS platforms, website builders, design tools, form builders, analytics products, automation-only tools, backend-only infrastructure, developer frameworks, and general AI coding assistants unless app creation, app deployment, or app-building workflows were presented as a central advertised use case. For ambiguous cases, we included a tool only when a buyer would reasonably describe it as an app builder, no-code builder, low-code platform, mobile app builder, or AI app-generation product rather than as a general website, content, analytics, automation, or developer tool.
We stopped at 117 tools because, based on the breadth of the market scan, this sample captures the large majority of visible, relevant, and commercially meaningful products in the app builder market. A small number of niche, regional, deprecated, or newly launched tools may have been missed, but the dataset is designed to represent the most meaningful competitive landscape rather than every marginal edge case.
The app builder category includes many individual features, often described with inconsistent terminology across vendors. To make the analysis readable and comparable, we grouped these capabilities into 12 broader feature categories: visual building, templates and modules, native mobile publishing, website and WordPress wrapping, ecommerce and checkout, push notifications and engagement, databases and connectors, workflow automation and backend logic, API integrations, AI app generation, custom code extensibility, and enterprise governance.
This categorization avoids two common problems: treating every vendor-specific wording as a separate feature, which would make the analysis too fragmented, and using overly broad buckets, which would obscure meaningful differences between product types such as native mobile builders, ecommerce app builders, internal tool builders, and AI prompt-to-app platforms.
For each feature, we applied a standardized availability label based on the information published by each vendor. Absent means the feature is not available, or does not appear to be available, based on public information. Free full means the feature is available for free without meaningful usage limits. Free limited means the feature is available for free, but with usage, volume, publishing, functionality, branding, project, seat, export, or access limits.
Paid only means the feature is available only through a paid plan, paid add-on, paid deployment tier, or commercial package. Trial only means the feature is available only during a free trial or temporary evaluation period. Restricted means the feature depends on a specific integration, platform, app store process, region, device type, partner, implementation service, enterprise arrangement, beta program, or other restricted access condition. Unclear means the feature appears to be present, but public information does not clearly indicate whether it is free, paid, trial-based, limited, or restricted.
When public information was incomplete or ambiguous, we avoided inferring availability beyond what could reasonably be supported by the vendor's own pages. In those cases, we used the Unclear label rather than assuming that a feature was free, paid, fully available, or unavailable.
For the quantitative analysis, a feature was counted as present when it was labeled Free full, Free limited, Paid only, Trial only, Restricted, or Unclear. A feature was counted as not present only when it was labeled Absent. This makes the presence analysis intentionally broad, while the availability-label breakdown shows how accessible or monetized each present feature appears to be.
Feature penetration percentages are calculated across the full 117-tool dataset. Availability-status percentages are calculated only among tools where the feature is present, so paywall, free, restricted, trial, and unclear rates reflect the packaging of actual implementations rather than being diluted by tools that do not offer the feature at all.
