We Compared The Features of 114 Habit Tracking Apps: Here's What We Found
Last updated: May 25, 2026
Habit tracking apps have fully commoditized logging, but almost nothing else is actually settled. We analyzed 114 habit tracking apps, built the dataset ourselves from public feature information, and classified every feature with a seven-label availability scheme. The goal was to figure out which features actually matter in habit tracking apps and what to build if you are shipping your own habit tracker.
The dataset spans seven workflow families: daily streak tracking, goal progress analytics, wellness and lifestyle habits, gamified habit motivation, routine planning and sequencing, social accountability and coaching, and minimal private tracking. For each app, we captured a comparable feature taxonomy covering the core habit loop, motivation systems, planning depth, accountability, wellness framing, and platform coverage, then classified actual packaging rather than marketing claims.
If you want to see what proven feature decisions look like beyond habit tracking apps, our database of 300 profitable internet businesses breaks down what each one shipped, gated, or skipped.
Summary
This study analyzes the feature landscape of 114 habit tracking apps across daily streak tracking, analytics-led habit tracking, wellness habits, gamified motivation, routine planning, social coaching, and minimal private tracking. The dataset captures 12 feature categories, from check-ins and streaks to gamification, commitment contracts, self-care tracking, and sync, each classified by actual availability status.
Check-ins and habit logging appear in 100% of habit tracking apps, which means logging is no longer a differentiator. The real packaging question is whether users get unlimited tracking for free, and only 36.8% of apps make check-ins free-full.
Flexible schedules appear in 112 of 114 apps, which confirms that weekly, custom, and non-daily habit frequencies are close to table stakes. Only 9 apps make flexible schedules paid-only, which means schedule flexibility is widely expected rather than safely premium.
Charts and analytics appear in 97.4% of habit tracking apps, but 14 present implementations are paid-only. This suggests basic progress visibility is expected, while deeper analytics remains one of the clearer upgrade paths.
Goal planning is one of the most accessible broad feature groups, with 36 free-full and 40 free-limited cases among 105 apps that offer it. That makes goals easier to give away than analytics, even though both are widely adopted.
Health and self-care tracking appears in 93.0% of the dataset, which means habit tracking apps increasingly position as wellness companions rather than simple streak counters. Most health and self-care implementations are free-full or free-limited, which suggests they broaden use cases more than they directly monetize.
Sync and integrations appear in 100 apps, but 46.0% of those implementations are unclear and 35.0% are restricted. This makes sync one of the least standardized feature areas and one of the safest monetization candidates for cross-device users.
Routine builders split the category exactly in half, with 57 apps offering them and 57 not offering them. They are universal inside routine-planning apps, but only appear in 33% of daily streak apps, which confirms a real product philosophy divide.
Gamification appears in only 40.4% of habit tracking apps, which is lower than the visual style of the category suggests. Among apps that offer it, 21.7% make it paid-only, which makes gamification a stronger differentiator than logging, schedules, reminders, or goals.
Social accountability is still a minority feature at 28.9% penetration, and commitment contracts are almost absent at 1.8%. This confirms that most habit tracking apps are still built for private self-management rather than external pressure or financial stakes.
Wellness apps have the broadest feature bundles, reaching 100% availability for check-ins, schedules, reminders, analytics, health and self-care, and sync. Their differentiation is therefore less about core tracking and more about framing, content, coaching, and emotional experience.

We built this dataset from scratch. For each of the 114 habit tracking apps, we inspected public feature information and recorded the availability of 12 feature categories: daily check-ins and completion logging, streak counters and chain protection, flexible habit schedules and frequencies, reminders and nudges, charts and progress analytics, goal planning and measurable targets, routine builders and step timers, gamification and rewards, social accountability, commitment contracts, health and self-care tracking, and sync or platform coverage. Each feature was classified with one of seven standardized labels: Absent, Free full, Free limited, Paid only, Trial only, Restricted, or Unclear. The full comparison table is below.
| Name | Primary Workflow | Business Model | Daily check-ins and completion logging | Streak counters and chain protection | Flexible habit schedules and frequencies | Reminders, alarms, and nudges | Charts, statistics, and progress analytics | Goal planning and measurable targets | Routine builders and step timers | Gamification, rewards, and avatars | Social sharing and friend accountability | Commitment contracts and financial stakes | Health, wellness, and self-care tracking | Sync, integrations, and platform coverage |

Building a digital business?
We have mapped 300+ proven internet businesses. You'll get the full breakdown: revenue, distribution, why it works and how to replicate.
GET THE FULL DATABASE → $49Questions on features of habit tracking apps
These are the questions we kept returning to while building the dataset. They matter if you are trying to understand which features in habit tracking apps are non-negotiable, which ones differentiate, which ones to gate, and what to ship if you are building your own habit tracker.
Which features are commoditized in habit tracking apps?
The commoditized features in habit tracking apps are check-ins, flexible schedules, charts, goals, health tracking, reminders, streaks, and sync, all present in at least 87.7% of the dataset. Check-ins are the only fully universal feature at 114 of 114 apps, which makes habit logging the baseline rather than a selling point.
The strongest commoditization signal is check-ins. Every app in the dataset offers some form of completion logging, so a new habit tracking app that leads with “track your habits” is saying almost nothing competitive.
Flexible schedules are nearly as universal at 98.2%. Weekly habits, custom frequencies, and non-daily routines are now close to buyer expectations, not advanced workflow design.
Analytics and goals also sit in the table-stakes layer. Charts appear in 111 apps and goal planning appears in 105, which means users expect both reflection and intention-setting inside the same product.
Streaks and reminders are slightly less universal, both appearing in 102 apps. That gap matters because it shows that habit tracking apps can still be credible without streak pressure or notification-heavy motivation.
Sync is present in 100 apps, which is high enough to feel expected for mainstream users. The difference is that sync is commoditized in presence, but not in access, because restricted and unclear packaging dominate the feature.
Which features are usually free by default in habit tracking apps?
The features usually free by default in habit tracking apps are the basic habit loop: check-ins, goals, health and self-care tracking, and flexible schedules. Check-ins have 42 free-full and 46 free-limited cases, while goal planning has 76 free or limited-free cases among apps that offer it.
Free access in habit tracking apps usually means “available with some cap,” not unlimited. Check-ins are universal, but free-limited is more common than free-full, which turns the core habit loop into a freemium conversion surface.
Goal planning is more generous than analytics. Among 105 apps with goals, 36 are free-full and 40 are free-limited, which makes goals one of the least risky features to expose at the free tier.
Health and self-care tracking follows a similar pattern. It appears in 106 apps, with 35 free-full and 44 free-limited cases, which suggests vendors use wellness framing to expand usage rather than to create a hard paywall.
Flexible schedules are also usually accessible. Only 9 present implementations are paid-only, so making custom schedules premium-only would feel stricter than most of the market.
Minimal private trackers and free Android-style habit apps help explain the free-full layer. Loop Habit Tracker, HabitShare, Habitica, Steddy, OpenHabitTracker, Track & Graph, and HabitSync illustrate how some apps compete on free access rather than feature depth.
Which features are most often limited, paywalled, or premium-only in habit tracking apps?
The most gated features in habit tracking apps are sync, gamification, analytics, and routines. Sync has 35 restricted cases among 100 present implementations, gamification has the highest paid-only share among broad features at 21.7%, and analytics has 14 paid-only cases.
Sync is the clearest example of compound gating. Only 6 apps offer it as free-full, while 35 restrict it by platform, device, account, integration, or ecosystem condition.
Paid-only gating is most visible in analytics and gamification. Analytics has 14 paid-only cases because deeper charts, longer history, and richer progress views are natural upgrade triggers.
Gamification is less common overall, but more premium when present. Only 46 apps offer gamification, and 10 of those make it paid-only, which is a much stronger gating signal than for core logging.
Routines sit in the middle. They appear in 57 apps, with 25 free-limited and 5 paid-only cases, which makes them a common freemium cap rather than a pure premium wall.
Restricted gating also appears around social and health features. Social accountability has 4 restricted cases among 33 present implementations, while health tracking has only 1, which makes social access more dependent on community, coaching, or platform constraints.
The build lesson is to separate three mechanics: cap the core habit loop, paywall advanced motivation or analytics, and restrict sync where platform economics justify it. Habit tracking apps that use only one of those levers leave monetization on the table.
If you want to see what premium features look like across 300 different businesses, our database of 300 profitable internet businesses breaks down exactly what each one chose to gate.
Which features still set habit tracking apps apart?
The strongest differentiators in habit tracking apps are routines, gamification, social accountability, commitment contracts, and sync quality. They either sit well below universal penetration, like social accountability at 28.9%, or they are widely present but poorly standardized, like sync at 87.7% penetration with heavy restriction and ambiguity.
Routine builders separate planner-style products from simple streak trackers. They appear in 100% of routine apps but only 33% of daily streak apps, which means the feature signals a different product philosophy rather than just extra functionality.
Gamification is the clearest motivation differentiator. It appears in 14 of 15 gamified apps, but only 46 apps overall, so avatars, rewards, quests, and levels immediately mark a product as serving a different user mindset.
Social accountability distinguishes coaching-led products from private trackers. Social features appear in 70% of social and coaching apps, but only 13% of daily streak apps and 8% of routine apps.
Commitment contracts are the sharpest niche differentiator because they appear in only 2 of 114 apps. Beeminder and stickK-style financial stakes can stand out quickly, but the low penetration also signals a narrower audience.
Sync quality is a quieter differentiator. Users may assume cross-device continuity exists, but fully free sync appears in only 6 apps, which gives a new entrant room to win on reliability and clarity rather than novelty.
If you are trying to figure out what makes a product genuinely different in its category, our database of 300 proven internet businesses shows how each one carved out its differentiation feature by feature.
Which features are rarely offered in habit tracking apps?
The rarest features in habit tracking apps are commitment contracts, social accountability, and gamification. Commitment contracts appear in only 2 of 114 apps, social accountability appears in 33, and gamification appears in 46.
Commitment contracts are almost absent from habit tracking apps. Only Beeminder and stickK-style products make financial stakes or commitment mechanisms visible enough to count, which makes this a niche behavioral model rather than a category norm.
Social accountability is rare outside coaching-led products. It appears in 7 of 10 social and coaching apps, but only 4 of 30 daily streak apps and 1 of 12 routine apps.
Gamification is also rarer than the category’s visual language suggests. Many habit tracking apps use friendly illustrations or badges, but only 40.4% visibly offer gamification, rewards, avatars, or structured game mechanics.
Routine builders are not rare overall, but they are rare in some workflows. Daily streak apps include routines in only 10 of 30 cases, which means a streak-first product can still be considered complete without sequencing or step timers.
The important reading rule is that rarity in habit tracking apps is often about motivation model. Private self-tracking dominates the category, while external pressure, game loops, and structured routines define narrower sub-categories.
Which missing features create the biggest opportunity in habit tracking apps?
The biggest missing-feature opportunities in habit tracking apps are social accountability, routines, gamification, and commitment contracts. Each sits below 50% penetration except routines, which split the market exactly in half and create a clear opportunity for hybrid products.
Social accountability is the clearest white space because it is useful across many habit types but appears in only 28.9% of apps. A product that adds lightweight friend accountability without becoming a full coaching app could occupy a gap between private trackers and expensive accountability services.
Routines create an opportunity at the intersection of habit tracking and daily planning. They are universal in routine apps, but missing from two-thirds of daily streak apps, which leaves room for streak products that evolve into structured execution tools.
Gamification is another underbuilt layer. Since gamified apps almost always include it, but the broader category does not, a new entrant can use rewards or avatars to create a visible identity without rebuilding every core feature from scratch.
Commitment contracts are the riskiest but sharpest opportunity. Only 2 apps offer them, which means financial stakes would instantly differentiate a product, but likely narrow the audience to users who actively want hard accountability.
The highest-potential opportunity is probably not one missing feature alone. It is a hybrid: private logging plus routines, basic analytics plus social proof, or streaks plus optional financial stakes.
If you want to spot feature gaps that buyers will actually pay to close, our internet business database surfaces the same patterns across 300 different markets.
What should be free versus paid in habit tracking apps?
In habit tracking apps, the free tier should cover the basic habit loop: check-ins, flexible schedules, reminders, goals, basic analytics, and self-care tracking. The safest paid layers are advanced analytics, gamification, routines at scale, and sync, especially because sync has only 6 free-full cases among 100 present implementations.
Check-ins should not be fully paywalled in a mainstream habit tracking app. Every app has logging, and 88 apps make it either free-full or free-limited, so paid-only logging creates adoption friction unless the product is deliberately pay-once.
Flexible schedules should also stay accessible. With 98.2% penetration and only 9 paid-only cases, schedule flexibility is too close to table stakes to use as the main upgrade trigger.
Goals and health tracking are good free-tier breadth features. Both are widely offered and often free or limited-free, which means users will notice if they are missing more than they will pay specifically to unlock them.
Analytics can be split cleanly. Basic charts should be free because 97.4% of apps offer analytics, but deeper history, trend views, exports, and advanced comparisons can sit behind a paid plan.
Sync is the strongest paid candidate because users understand its practical value. Making cloud backup, cross-device continuity, widgets, watch support, or integrations premium is more aligned with the market than charging for basic habit creation.
Which features make users upgrade to paid plans in habit tracking apps?
Users upgrade in habit tracking apps when a product turns daily use into dependence: more habits, longer history, better analytics, richer routines, gamification depth, and cross-device sync. The strongest upgrade signals in the dataset are analytics with 14 paid-only cases, gamification with 10 paid-only cases, and sync with 35 restricted cases.
Usage caps on check-ins are the first upgrade lever. Since free-limited is the dominant check-in model, many apps convert users when they exceed habit counts, history limits, customization caps, or device limits.
Analytics upgrades are easy to justify because users accumulate data over time. Once progress history becomes valuable, paid charts, trend views, and insights feel less like extras and more like access to the user’s own record.
Sync drives upgrades because it protects continuity. Daily streak apps have 93% sync coverage, which suggests streak users care deeply about keeping progress intact across devices.
Gamification upgrades work when the product has an identity system. Apps like Habitica, Focumon, Habit Rewards, Do It Now, and Habit Hunter illustrate how motivation mechanics can become a reason to stay engaged beyond the checklist.
Routine upgrades are strongest when users move from tracking habits to executing sequences. Productive, Routinery, BeyondTime, and other routine apps show how timers, stacks, and structured flows can become the paid layer around basic habits.

What should the MVP of a habit tracking app include and what should it skip?
The MVP of a habit tracking app should include check-ins, flexible schedules, basic reminders, streak or progress feedback, simple goals, basic analytics, and a light self-care framing. It should skip commitment contracts, heavy social systems, deep gamification, and complex integrations unless one of those is the product’s workflow anchor.
The non-negotiable MVP surface starts with logging. Check-ins appear in 100% of the dataset, so launching without fast, clear completion tracking makes the product feel incomplete immediately.
Flexible schedules and goals should ship early. Flexible schedules appear in 112 apps and goals in 105, which means users expect the product to handle real life rather than only daily binary habits.
Basic analytics and reminders belong in the MVP, but they do not need to be deep. The market expects progress visibility and nudges, yet deeper analytics and advanced reminder logic can remain paid or later-stage.
The MVP should include one workflow anchor. A routine app needs step timers, a gamified app needs rewards, a coaching app needs accountability, and a minimal private tracker needs privacy and simplicity.
The MVP should skip commitment contracts unless the whole product is built around hard accountability. With only 2 apps offering them, contracts are too polarizing to add casually.
Deep sync and integrations can come after the first credible version. Users value them, but the restricted and unclear packaging around sync suggests buyers accept gradual platform expansion if the core habit loop works.

What are other interesting feature patterns in habit tracking apps?
Beyond the headline findings, habit tracking apps show several quieter patterns around ambiguity, workflow identity, and the difference between feature presence and usable access.
Unclear packaging is concentrated in the features users most likely assume are already included. Reminders have a 47.1% unclear rate among present implementations, and sync has a 46.0% unclear rate, which means many vendors under-explain practical access to daily-use features.
Social and routine features move in opposite directions. Routine apps are highly private, with only 1 of 12 offering social accountability, while social and coaching apps reach 70% social penetration but only 30% routine penetration.
Wellness apps behave like bundles rather than specialists. They hit 100% on check-ins, schedules, reminders, analytics, health tracking, and sync, which means differentiation likely comes from tone, content, and emotional design rather than raw feature coverage.
Minimal private trackers are the most structurally different workflow. They have only 43% sync coverage, which fits a value proposition where local simplicity and privacy often matter more than cloud continuity.
Trial-only packaging barely registers as a habit tracking app strategy. Across the feature groups, trial-only counts stay very low, which means the category prefers freemium caps, paid unlocks, pay-once models, or unclear packaging over pure time-limited trials.

We collected and analyzed the features of 114 habit tracking apps, then read the aggregates as a product strategy map rather than a simple feature checklist. These are the higher-order patterns that emerge from the dataset.
- The main strategic split in habit tracking apps is not between simple and advanced products. It is between self-directed behavior change and externally reinforced behavior change. Logging, goals, and analytics support self-direction, while social accountability and commitment contracts introduce external pressure.
- Habit tracking apps show a clear difference between emotional differentiation and functional differentiation. Wellness apps often differentiate through framing and tone because their functional bundles are broad. Gamified apps differentiate more visibly because game mechanics alter the core experience.
- The category has a two-layer table-stakes pattern. The first layer is pure habit capture, led by check-ins and schedules. The second layer is habit meaning, led by goals, analytics, reminders, and self-care tracking.
- Across habit tracking apps, sync behaves like infrastructure rather than a normal feature. It is widely present, rarely free-full, often restricted, and frequently unclear. That makes it a trust signal as much as a monetization lever.
- Routine builders are the strongest evidence that habit tracking apps are expanding from measurement into execution. Once routines are present, the product is no longer just asking whether a habit happened. It is guiding how the behavior should unfold.
- The low adoption of commitment contracts suggests that most habit tracking apps avoid high-pressure behavior design. Even when financial stakes are effective for some users, the category norm favors encouragement, visibility, and nudges over punishment.
- Packaging ambiguity in habit tracking apps often appears where user expectations are practical rather than conceptual. Users understand what reminders and sync are, but vendors often fail to explain limits, platforms, or plan access clearly.
- Free-limited is the dominant compromise across habit tracking apps. It lets vendors advertise the complete core loop while preserving upgrade pressure through habit counts, history depth, customization, device coverage, or advanced insights.
- Workflow family predicts feature priorities more reliably than overall category norms. A routine app without routines is incomplete, a gamified app without rewards is incoherent, and a social coaching app without accountability loses its reason to exist.
- The strongest product opportunity in habit tracking apps is not adding another core tracker. It is combining an underused motivation model with a table-stakes tracking layer, then making the packaging clearer than incumbents.
Methodology
We analyzed 114 habit-tracking and habit-building apps based on publicly available information from their app store listings, homepages, feature pages, help pages, and pricing pages.
We include apps whose primary value proposition is to help users build, track, maintain, analyze, or improve habits, routines, streaks, goals, accountability, and behavior change over time. We exclude generic productivity apps, task managers, journaling apps, fitness apps, meditation apps, focus apps, and personal development tools unless habit tracking is a central advertised feature.
For ambiguous apps, we included them only if users would reasonably choose the product primarily to track habits rather than to manage tasks, wellbeing, fitness, or daily planning.
Our dataset focuses only on tools that are sufficiently comparable for pricing and feature-availability analysis. When a product appeared too broad, too unrelated, too ambiguous, or not meaningfully comparable with the rest of the habit-tracking category, it was excluded from the retained dataset. This makes the analysis more reliable for understanding competitive norms, monetization patterns, and product opportunities within the habit-tracking market.
The habit-tracking category includes many individual features, often described with inconsistent terminology across vendors. To make the analysis readable and comparable, we grouped these features into 12 broader feature categories: daily check-ins and completion logging, streak counters and chain protection, flexible habit schedules and frequencies, reminders and nudges, charts and progress analytics, goal planning and measurable targets, routine builders and step timers, gamification and rewards, social accountability, commitment contracts, health and self-care tracking, and sync or platform coverage.
This categorization avoids two common problems: treating every vendor-specific phrase as a separate feature, which would make the analysis too fragmented, and using overly broad buckets, which would obscure meaningful differences between products. For example, “habit history,” “progress charts,” “statistics,” and “trend views” were grouped under charts, statistics, and progress analytics, while “morning routines,” “step timers,” “routine sequences,” and “habit stacking” were grouped under routine builders and step timers.
For each feature, we applied a standardized availability label based on the information published by each vendor. Absent means the feature is not available, or does not appear to be available, based on public information. Free full means the feature is available for free without meaningful usage limits. Free limited means the feature is available for free, but with usage, volume, functionality, customization, history, device, or access limits.
Paid only means the feature is available only through a paid plan, one-time purchase, subscription, or premium unlock. Trial only means the feature is available only during a free trial or temporary evaluation period. Restricted means the feature depends on a specific platform, integration, device, region, account type, partner, beta program, or other restricted access condition. Unclear means the feature appears to be present, but public information does not clearly indicate whether it is free, paid, trial-based, limited, or restricted.
When public information was incomplete or ambiguous, we avoided inferring availability beyond what could reasonably be supported by the vendor’s own materials. In those cases, we used the Unclear label rather than assuming that a feature was free, paid, fully available, or unavailable.
For each feature, we calculated both overall adoption and availability among apps that offer the feature. Overall adoption measures how many apps in the dataset appear to offer the feature. Availability distribution measures how those apps expose the feature across free, limited-free, paid-only, trial-only, restricted, and unclear access models. We also reviewed the same patterns by primary workflow category to identify where features are table stakes, where they remain differentiated, and where pricing or access models vary meaningfully by product positioning.
