We Compared The Features of 124 Focus Apps: Here's What We Found
Last updated: May 25, 2026
Focus apps are split less by feature quality than by control philosophy. We studied 124 focus apps, built the dataset ourselves from public product information, classified every feature with a seven-label availability scheme, and ran the aggregates to see what buyers can actually use. The goal is simple: to figure out which features matter, which ones are table stakes, and what to build if you are shipping your own focus app.
The dataset spans seven workflow families: strict app and website blocking, mindful app-opening friction, feed and content decluttering, minimal phone interfaces, solo focus timers and planning, gamified focus rewards, and social accountability or focus environments. For each app we recorded a comparable focus-feature taxonomy and classified availability in a way that captures actual packaging rather than marketing claims.
If you want to see what proven feature decisions look like beyond focus apps, our database of 300 profitable internet businesses breaks down what each one shipped, gated, or skipped.
Summary
This study analyzes the feature landscape of 124 focus apps across strict blocking, mindful friction, feed decluttering, minimal phone, solo timer, gamified focus, and social accountability workflows. The dataset captures 12 feature categories and classifies each implementation by availability, so the analysis separates feature presence from feature access.
Pomodoro and interval timers are the most widely offered feature in focus apps, appearing in 69 of 124 apps, or 55.6%, which means session structure is slightly more common than blocking itself.
Custom blocklists and time limits both appear in 68 of 124 apps, or 54.8%, but their packaging is different: blocklists are more often paid, restricted, trial-only, or unclear, while time limits are mostly free limited.
Locked mode and anti-bypass enforcement appears in 66 of 124 focus apps, but only 6 of those implementations are free full, which confirms that hard enforcement is one of the category’s strongest monetization levers.
Cross-device sync is available in only 43 of 124 apps, and 25 of those 43 implementations are restricted, which means multi-device focus control is not just uncommon but heavily constrained when present.
Mindful delay appears in 34 of 124 apps, but 26 of those implementations are either free full or free limited, which suggests delay mechanics are usually treated as accessible behavior-change features rather than premium infrastructure.
Social feed hiding is one of the narrowest features in focus apps, appearing in only 11 of 124 apps, yet every present implementation is either free full or free limited, which makes it rare but unusually generous.
Minimal launcher functionality is the rarest feature overall, appearing in only 6 of 124 apps, and all 6 sit inside the minimal phone workflow, which confirms that launcher design defines a separate product boundary.
Strict blocking and mindful friction apps are closer than their positioning suggests. Both exceed 90% coverage for custom blocklists, but mindful delay separates them sharply: 22 of 23 mindful friction apps include it, versus only 5 of 28 strict blockers.
Social accountability apps almost never behave like blockers: only 4 of 15 include custom blocklists and only 3 include locked mode, which means they compete on environment and accountability rather than restriction.
Gamified focus apps are not purely soft habit tools. Seven of 12 include locked mode or anti-bypass enforcement, which means rewards and enforcement often coexist in the same focus product.
Body doubling and ambient workspaces appear in only 38 of 124 focus apps overall, but 14 of 15 social accountability apps include them, which means low category penetration hides a category-defining feature inside one workflow.

Get the full database →The full feature comparison table
We built this dataset from scratch. For each of the 124 focus apps, we inspected public feature information and recorded the app’s primary workflow, business model, and availability across 12 feature categories: custom blocklists, scheduled recurring blocking, locked mode, cross-device sync, time limits, mindful delay, social feed hiding, minimal launcher, Pomodoro timers, task planning, gamified rewards, and body doubling or ambient workspaces. Each feature was classified with one of seven standardized availability labels. The full comparison table is below.
| Name | Primary Workflow | Business Model | Custom app and website blocklists | Scheduled recurring blocking sessions | Locked mode and anti-bypass enforcement | Cross-device distraction blocking sync | Time limits and usage allowances | Mindful delay before opening apps | Social feed and recommendation hiding | Minimal launcher and dumbphone interface | Pomodoro and interval focus timers | Task planning with focus sessions | Gamified rewards and streak building | Body doubling and ambient workspaces |

GET THE FULL DATABASE → $49Questions on features of focus apps
These are the questions that matter if you are trying to understand which focus app features are expected, which ones differentiate, which ones should be free, and which ones are worth gating in a new product.
Which features are commoditized in focus apps?
The most commoditized features in focus apps are Pomodoro timers, custom blocklists, time limits, and locked mode, all appearing in more than half of the 124-app dataset. Pomodoro timers lead at 55.6%, which means the category’s most common feature is not blocking but structured focus sessions.
Pomodoro timers are the clearest table-stakes feature for timer-led products. They appear in 32 of 32 solo focus timer apps, 12 of 12 gamified focus apps, and 14 of 15 social accountability apps.
Custom blocklists are commoditized only in the workflows where blocking is central. They appear in 26 of 28 strict blocking apps and 22 of 23 mindful friction apps, but collapse to 8 of 32 solo timer apps and 4 of 15 social focus apps.
Time limits behave similarly. They are present in 25 of 28 strict blockers and 20 of 23 mindful friction apps, but only 2 of 12 gamified focus apps include them.
Locked mode is table stakes for blocker-first products but not for the category as a whole. It appears in 26 of 28 strict blockers and 19 of 23 mindful friction apps, while only 3 of 15 social accountability apps include it.
The practical rule is that focus apps do not have one universal core. They have workflow-specific cores: timers for session products, blocklists and locks for blockers, delay for friction tools, and shared environments for social focus apps.
Which features are usually free by default in focus apps?
The features most often free by default in focus apps are Pomodoro timers, feed hiding, mindful delay, and time limits. Pomodoro timers have the strongest free-full count, with 31 of 69 present implementations available fully free.
Pomodoro timers are the category’s most generous broad feature. They are not only the most common feature, but also the feature most often available without meaningful limits.
Feed hiding is even more generous among the few apps that offer it. All 11 implementations are either free full or free limited, with no paid-only, trial-only, restricted, or unclear cases.
Mindful delay is usually exposed in some form of free access. Of the 34 apps that include delay, 8 are free full and 18 are free limited, which makes aggressive paywalling unusual for this feature.
Time limits are not usually free full, but they are strongly free-limited. Thirty-nine of 68 implementations use free-limited access, which suggests time limits often work as an entry-level control with capped depth.
Free-full availability depends heavily on workflow. LeechBlock NG, StayFocusd, WasteNoTime, Pause, Mindful Internet Use, Olauncher, and many simple Pomodoro timers show the free-full side, while commercial focus suites usually reserve depth, volume, or enforcement for paid plans.
Which features are most often limited, paywalled, or premium-only in focus apps?
The most gated focus app features are locked mode, cross-device sync, scheduled recurring blocking, and minimal launcher functionality. Locked mode has only 6 free-full cases out of 66 present implementations, while cross-device sync is restricted in 25 of 43 implementations.
Locked mode is the cleanest hard-paywall candidate. Among apps that offer it, paid-only and free-limited are tied at 18 implementations each, while free-full access is rare.
Strict blockers make the premium logic especially visible. Of the 26 strict blocking apps with locked mode, 11 make it paid only, which positions anti-bypass enforcement as an upgrade trigger rather than a baseline courtesy.
Cross-device sync uses a different gating mechanic. It is less often a simple paid wall and more often restricted by platform, device, operating system, browser, account model, or companion hardware.
Scheduled recurring blocking is also constrained. It appears in 47 apps, but only 5 implementations are free full, which means recurring automation is commonly treated as an advanced control layer.
Minimal launcher access is rare and commercially mixed. Six apps offer it, with 2 paid-only, 2 free-limited, 1 trial-only, and 1 free-full, which suggests the interface itself can be the product being monetized.

Which features are still strong differentiators in focus apps?
The strongest differentiators in focus apps are mindful delay, cross-device sync, body doubling, social feed hiding, and minimal launcher design. Each one sharply identifies a workflow rather than simply adding another generic productivity feature.
Mindful delay is the cleanest differentiator between two adjacent product types. It appears in 22 of 23 mindful friction apps but only 5 of 28 strict blocking apps, which makes it the clearest separator between slowing access and blocking access.
Body doubling differentiates social accountability tools from every other focus app workflow. It appears in 14 of 15 social accountability apps, but it is much less common across the full dataset.
Social feed hiding defines feed decluttering apps. Six of 8 feed decluttering tools offer it, while almost no apps outside that workflow do, even though many focus apps target distraction broadly.
Minimal launcher design is the strongest product-boundary feature. All 6 implementations sit inside minimal phone apps, and no other workflow in the dataset includes it.
Cross-device sync can differentiate serious blocker products, but it is difficult to promise cleanly. Its high restricted share means builders can win trust by explaining exactly which devices, browsers, and operating systems are supported.
If you are trying to figure out what makes a product genuinely different in its category, our database of 300 proven internet businesses shows how each one carved out its differentiation feature by feature.
Which features are rarely offered in focus apps?
The rarest features in focus apps are minimal launcher functionality, social feed hiding, mindful delay, gamified rewards, and body doubling. Minimal launcher appears in only 6 of 124 apps, while feed hiding appears in 11.
Minimal launcher is rare because it is not a feature most focus apps can casually add. It changes the phone’s surface, the user’s default interaction model, and the product’s category identity.
Social feed hiding is also narrow, but for a different reason. It is concentrated in browser and content-decluttering tools like News Feed Eradicator, Unhook, DF Tube, SocialFocus, Hide Feed, and SurfPal.
Mindful delay appears in only 34 apps overall, even though it is nearly universal inside mindful friction products. That makes it rare at category level but not rare inside its native workflow.
Gamification appears in 35 apps, but it is unevenly distributed. It is universal in gamified focus products, yet mostly absent from feed decluttering, minimal phone, and strict enforcement products.
Body doubling appears in 38 apps, but the overall number can be misleading. It is not a broad focus app expectation; it is mostly an anchor feature for social accountability and ambient work products.
Which missing features create the biggest opportunity in focus apps?
The biggest opportunities in focus apps sit where adjacent workflows rarely borrow from each other: feed hiding plus delay, social accountability plus lightweight blocking, and minimal phone design plus meaningful enforcement. These gaps look more like product-scope inertia than evidence of low user demand.
Feed hiding and mindful delay almost never overlap, despite both being low-friction ways to reduce impulsive use. A product that slows entry and cleans the feed could serve users who do not want hard blocking.
Social accountability apps have a clear opening around lightweight controls. Only 4 of 15 include custom blocklists and only 3 include locked mode, even though 8 of 15 already include time limits.
Minimal phone apps also underuse enforcement. Only 1 of 6 includes custom blocklists, scheduled recurring blocking, or locked mode, while 3 of 6 include mindful delay.
Gamified focus apps show another opportunity around limits. They universally combine Pomodoro and rewards, but only 2 of 12 include time limits, leaving room for products that connect motivation with actual usage boundaries.
The better opportunity is not to add every feature to every focus app. It is to import one adjacent feature into a workflow where the user need is obvious but the current category norm is thin.
If you want to spot feature gaps that buyers will actually pay to close, our database of 300 profitable internet businesses surfaces the same patterns across 300 different markets.
What should be free versus paid in focus apps?
In focus apps, the free layer should usually include the basic focus loop: a timer, a small set of limits, simple delay, or entry-level blocking. Paid plans should gate depth, enforcement, recurring automation, cross-device sync, and advanced workflows.
The dataset shows that users expect basic focus access before paying. Pomodoro timers are frequently free full, time limits are usually free limited, and mindful delay is usually available through free full or free limited access.
Hard controls are safer to monetize. Locked mode, scheduled recurring blocking, and deeper custom blocklist controls are often limited or paid, especially in strict blocking products.
Cross-device sync should rarely be treated as a casual free feature. Its restricted profile suggests it carries real platform, account, integration, or support complexity.
For feed decluttering products, the core feed-hiding feature should probably remain free or free limited. The data shows no paid-only cases for social feed hiding itself, while adjacent controls are more likely to be paid.
For minimal phone products, the interface can be monetized directly. The dataset shows minimal launcher access split between free-limited, paid-only, trial-only, and free-full, which gives builders more room to charge for the core experience.

STEAL WHAT WORKS → $49Which features make users upgrade to paid plans in focus apps?
Users upgrade in focus apps when they need stronger control, recurring automation, deeper limits, or multi-device coverage. Locked mode, scheduled recurring blocking, cross-device sync, and advanced blocklists are the clearest upgrade levers.
Locked mode turns focus from preference into enforcement. That is why strict blockers like Cold Turkey Blocker, Focus, Focus Bear, Jomo, Roots, and Habit Doom place hard-control mechanics behind paid or limited access.
Scheduled blocking creates a second upgrade path. Users can start with manual blocks, then pay when they want routines, recurring sessions, schedules, or more automated protection.
Cross-device sync drives upgrades differently. The buyer is not just paying for a feature; they are paying for coverage across phone, desktop, browser, account, or operating-system environments.
Time limits create lighter conversion pressure. Because 39 of 68 implementations are free limited, the upgrade trigger is usually volume, number of apps, number of rules, duration, history, or customization rather than the mere existence of limits.
Social accountability apps upgrade through access frequency and environment depth rather than blocking. Focusmate, FLOWN, Caveday, Cofocus, LifeAt, Study Together, and Flocus are better read as session-access products than enforcement products.
If you are shipping your own product, our database of 300 proven internet businesses includes SaaS examples and the exact features each one chose to gate at upgrade.
What should the MVP of a focus app include and what should it skip?
The MVP of a focus app should include one workflow-defining anchor plus a small support layer, not the whole category feature set. A strict blocker needs blocklists and enforcement, a timer app needs Pomodoro sessions, a mindful friction app needs delay, and a social focus app needs shared work environments.
A strict app and website blocker should start with custom blocklists, time limits, and some form of lock or anti-bypass mode. Scheduled recurring blocking can follow quickly because 23 of 28 strict blockers include it.
A mindful friction app should not launch without delay. Twenty-two of 23 mindful friction apps include mindful delay, and 22 of 23 also include custom blocklists, so the workflow expects both access friction and target selection.
A solo timer app should start with Pomodoro and task planning before adding blockers. All 32 solo timer apps include Pomodoro timers, while only 8 include custom blocklists and only 2 include scheduled recurring blocking.
A gamified focus app should start with timers and rewards. Both are universal in the workflow, while time limits and scheduled blocking are not required for credibility at launch.
A social accountability app should start with body doubling or ambient workspaces. Blocking can be skipped at MVP because only 4 of 15 social accountability apps include custom blocklists.
The biggest MVP mistake is mixing workflows too early. A focus app should feel complete inside one control philosophy before it tries to become a full digital wellbeing suite.

What are other interesting feature patterns in focus apps?
Beyond the headline patterns, focus apps reveal several quieter feature dynamics about how products package control, habit formation, and environment design.
Cross-device sync is the category’s biggest “available but constrained” feature. Thirty-four of 43 implementations are not clearly full free access, which means support boundaries matter almost as much as pricing.
Task planning looks broad but not generous. It appears in 54 apps, yet only 5 implementations are free full, which suggests planning is often used as a capped engagement layer rather than a full free utility.
Solo timer apps monetize depth rather than basic timing. Pomodoro access is often generous, but task planning, history, advanced workflows, and occasional blocker add-ons are where paid logic enters.
Feed decluttering has an unusual commercial shape. The core feature is typically free, but when these apps expand into scheduled blocking, locked mode, or cross-device control, those adjacent features become paid or unclear.
Minimal phone apps are not miniature versions of blocker suites. They rarely include Pomodoro, gamification, social spaces, or strict enforcement, which makes their category logic much closer to interface simplification than digital control.

STEAL WHAT WORKS → $49Insights
We collected and analyzed the features of 124 focus apps, then read the aggregates as a category map rather than as isolated feature counts. These are the higher-order patterns that emerge from the dataset.
- Workflow is the strongest predictor of feature presence in focus apps. The same feature can be table stakes in one workflow and irrelevant in another. This makes workflow classification more useful than category-wide averages when deciding what to build.
- Focus apps cluster into three control philosophies: block access, slow access, or structure attention. Strict blockers, mindful friction tools, and timer or social products are solving the same broad problem through different behavior models. Mixing those models too early can blur the product promise.
- The category’s most common features are not necessarily its strongest monetization levers. Pomodoro timers, time limits, and blocklists are widespread, but locked mode and cross-device sync create more obvious paid-plan pressure. Builders should not confuse penetration with pricing power.
- Free-limited access is the default compromise across focus apps. It lets products expose the behavior loop while reserving depth, frequency, rule volume, duration, or device coverage for paid users. This is especially visible in time limits, task planning, and body doubling.
- Hard enforcement is the clearest trust-versus-revenue tradeoff in focus apps. Users want lock modes to be reliable, but vendors often gate them because reliability, anti-bypass design, and support burden are commercially meaningful. A weak free lock can damage trust more than no lock at all.
- Restricted access is a hidden packaging axis in focus apps. Cross-device sync, locked mode, and hardware-assisted controls are often limited by platform or device rather than by price alone. A pricing page that ignores these restrictions will overpromise the product.
- Focus apps use “soft” features in two very different ways. Mindful delay and feed hiding reduce friction without aggressive monetization, while task planning and body doubling often become free-limited engagement layers. The feature may feel soft to users, but its business role can be very different.
- Minimal phone apps are structurally separate from blocker-first focus apps. Their rare overlap with enforcement shows that simplifying the interface is not the same product promise as preventing access. Treating them as substitutes hides the real competitive boundary.
- Social accountability focus apps monetize participation more than control. Their low blocking coverage and high body-doubling coverage show that the product is the work environment, not the restriction system. This changes both MVP scope and upgrade design.
- Gamified focus apps are more hybrid than their branding suggests. Several combine rewards with anti-bypass controls or ambient workspaces, which means gamification is not just a playful wrapper. It can sit on top of serious focus infrastructure.
- Packaging ambiguity in focus apps often appears where features depend on external systems. Cross-device sync, locked modes, and some blocker functions become unclear when vendors do not specify devices, operating systems, browsers, or permissions. Clear compatibility language is a competitive advantage.
- The broad category average understates how concentrated many focus app features are. Feed hiding, minimal launcher design, mindful delay, and body doubling each look niche overall, but each defines a workflow when viewed in context. Category-level rarity can hide workflow-level necessity.
Methodology
We analyzed 124 digital focus, distraction-blocking, screen-time, and deep-work apps based on publicly available information from their homepages, feature pages, pricing pages, app store listings, documentation, and other vendor-controlled product descriptions.
We include apps whose primary value proposition is to help users reduce distractions, concentrate, block interruptions, manage deep work sessions, use timers, structure attention, or improve focus habits. We exclude generic productivity apps, task managers, meditation apps, habit trackers, time tracking tools, browser blockers, and calendar tools unless focus improvement is a central advertised feature. For ambiguous apps, we include them only if users would choose the product primarily to stay focused rather than to manage tasks, time, wellbeing, or productivity more broadly.
The dataset focuses on tools that are sufficiently comparable for pricing and feature-availability analysis. We excluded generic productivity suites, generic to-do list apps, generic calendar apps, meditation apps, note-taking tools, workplace collaboration platforms, generic analytics tools, and broad wellness products unless digital distraction reduction, app or website blocking, focus sessions, screen-time control, or deep-work support was presented as a central advertised feature.
Because the market includes several adjacent product types, we grouped apps by their primary workflow: strict app and website blocking, mindful app-opening friction, feed and content decluttering, minimal phone interfaces, solo focus timers and planning, gamified focus rewards, and social accountability or focus environments. This makes it possible to compare tools that compete directly while still capturing the broader category structure.
The category includes many individual features, often described with inconsistent terminology across vendors. To make the analysis readable and comparable, we grouped these features into 12 broader feature categories: custom app and website blocklists, scheduled recurring blocking sessions, locked mode and anti-bypass enforcement, cross-device distraction blocking sync, time limits and usage allowances, mindful delay before opening apps, social feed and recommendation hiding, minimal launcher and dumbphone interface, Pomodoro and interval focus timers, task planning with focus sessions, gamified rewards and streak building, and body doubling or ambient workspaces.
This categorization avoids two common problems: treating every vendor-specific wording as a separate feature, which would make the analysis too fragmented, and using overly broad buckets, which would obscure meaningful differences between products. For example, several vendors describe blocking, limits, lock modes, and session controls differently, but these were normalized only when the underlying user-facing function was meaningfully comparable.
For each feature, we applied a standardized availability label based on the information published by each vendor. Absent means the feature is not available, or does not appear to be available, based on public information. Free full means the feature is available for free without meaningful usage limits. Free limited means the feature is available for free, but with usage, volume, functionality, device, session, duration, or access limits.
Paid only means the feature is available only through a paid plan, paid upgrade, paid app purchase, or paid add-on. Trial only means the feature is available only during a free trial or temporary evaluation period. Restricted means the feature depends on a specific device, operating system, browser, integration, physical accessory, region, partner, beta program, workspace, or other restricted access condition. Unclear means the feature appears to be present, but public information does not clearly indicate whether it is free, paid, trial-based, limited, or restricted.
When public information was incomplete or ambiguous, we avoided inferring availability beyond what could reasonably be supported by the vendor’s own materials. In those cases, we used the Unclear label rather than assuming that a feature was free, paid, fully available, or unavailable.
Feature coverage was calculated as the number and percentage of apps in the dataset where a feature is available under any non-absent label. Availability distribution was then calculated only among apps where that feature is present. This distinction matters because a feature can be rare overall but mostly free among the few apps that offer it, or common overall but heavily limited, restricted, or paywalled once present.
We also analyzed feature coverage and availability by primary workflow. This prevents category-level averages from hiding important differences between app types. For example, Pomodoro timers are nearly universal in timer-based and gamified focus products, while custom blocklists are concentrated in strict blocking and mindful friction products.
The result is designed to represent the most visible, relevant, and commercially meaningful products in the digital focus and distraction-control category, rather than every marginal, abandoned, regional, or extremely narrow edge case. A small number of niche or newly launched tools may have been missed, but the dataset is intended to support rigorous market-level conclusions about feature commoditization, free-plan expectations, premium packaging, and product differentiation.
