We Compared The Features of 127 Language Learning Apps: Here's What We Found

Last updated: May 25, 2026

Language-learning apps have a clear premium fault line: AI roleplay is present in only 36.2% of apps, and none of those implementations are fully free. We built a 127-app dataset ourselves, classified every feature with a seven-label availability scheme, and ran the aggregates to figure out what features actually matter if you are shipping your own language learning app.

The dataset spans seven workflow families: language-specific mastery, AI speaking coaching, structured language courses, immersive media comprehension, vocabulary memory practice, human exchange practice, and audio speaking drills. For each app we recorded a practical feature taxonomy covering lessons, memory, speech, conversation, reading, media, audio, writing systems, gamification, and travel use cases, then classified access in a way that captures actual packaging rather than marketing claims.

Summary

This study analyzes the feature landscape of 127 language learning apps captured from public feature information. The dataset covers language-specific mastery, AI speaking coaching, structured language courses, immersive media comprehension, vocabulary memory practice, human exchange practice, and audio speaking drills, with each app classified across 12 feature categories and a standardized availability scheme.

Four features have effectively commoditized in language learning apps: grammar explanations, spaced repetition, audio-first recall, and guided bite-sized lesson paths all appear in more than 82% of the dataset, which means a new general-purpose app missing them will feel incomplete.

Grammar is the broadest feature in the market, present in 110 of 127 apps, which confirms that explanation and drills remain core even as apps reposition around AI, media, or conversation.

Spaced repetition is almost universal at 85.8% penetration, but only 3.7% of apps that offer it make it fully free, which shows that memory infrastructure is table stakes without being a giveaway.

AI roleplay is the clearest premium signal in language learning apps. It appears in 46 of 127 apps, but 0% of present implementations are free-full and 41.3% are paid-only, which makes conversation simulation one of the safest capabilities to monetize.

Speech recognition has moved beyond AI-speaking products. It appears in 62.2% of all apps and 80% of structured course apps, which means pronunciation feedback is now a mainstream competitive expectation rather than a niche speaking-coach feature.

Native speaker community correction is the rarest tracked feature, present in only 13 of 127 apps, which confirms that human feedback has not scaled across the broader app market despite being valuable when it exists.

Immersive media features are more specialized than the category language suggests. Video subtitles and media learning appear in only 24.4% of the dataset, which means media learning is a workflow anchor rather than a horizontal requirement.

Writing-system and stroke practice is rare overall at 20.5% penetration, but it is concentrated in language-specific mastery apps, where 41% include it, which makes the feature a script-driven differentiator rather than a universal product expectation.

Free-limited access is the default packaging posture across language learning apps. Most major features are exposed to free users in capped form, which means freemium products compete on activation while reserving depth, volume, personalization, or advanced feedback for paid plans.

Structured course apps have the clearest baseline feature set. They show 100% coverage for guided lessons, spaced repetition, grammar, and gamification, which makes that workflow the strictest benchmark for table-stakes breadth.

The biggest white-space combination is human-style correction plus AI roleplay plus structured progression. Each capability exists in the market, but the dataset shows they rarely combine deeply across workflow families, which creates an obvious product-design opening.

The comparison table

We built this dataset from scratch. For each of the 127 language learning apps, we inspected public feature information and recorded the availability of 12 feature categories: guided bite-sized lesson paths, spaced repetition vocabulary reviews, speech recognition pronunciation feedback, AI roleplay conversation practice, native speaker community corrections, grammar explanations and drills, graded reading with translations, video subtitles and media learning, audio-first recall lessons, writing systems and stroke practice, gamified motivation mechanics, and travel phrases and survival language. We also captured the primary workflow and business model, then classified each feature with one of seven standardized availability labels. The full comparison table is below.

Questions on features of language learning apps

These are the questions we kept returning to while building the dataset. They matter if you are trying to work out which features in language learning apps are non-negotiable, which ones differentiate, which ones to gate, and what to ship if you are building your own product.

Which features are commoditized in language learning apps?

The commoditized features in language learning apps are grammar explanations, spaced repetition, audio-first recall, and guided bite-sized lessons. Each appears in more than 82% of the 127-app dataset, which makes them the practical baseline for any broad language learning product.

Grammar is the strongest commoditization signal because it appears in 110 apps, slightly ahead of spaced repetition at 109 apps and audio-first recall at 106 apps. This matters because grammar has survived every new product wave in the category.

Guided bite-sized lessons appear in 105 apps, which confirms that structured progression is still expected even when the product is marketed around AI, immersion, flashcards, or conversation. AI speaking apps prove the point most clearly, with 26 of 27 including guided lesson paths.

The most commoditized bundle is guided lessons, spaced repetition, grammar, and audio recall. Together they define the minimum credible learning loop: teach something, explain it, make the learner hear it, and bring it back for review.

Structured course apps show the strictest baseline. All 20 structured course apps include guided lessons, spaced repetition, grammar, and gamification, so this workflow leaves very little room for a thin MVP.

The takeaway for builders is that broad language learning apps cannot differentiate by simply shipping lessons, grammar, reviews, and audio. Those features are expected infrastructure; differentiation has to come from the layer above them.

Which features are usually free by default in language learning apps?

The features most often free by default in language learning apps are the activation features: guided lessons, grammar drills, audio recall, gamification, and travel phrases, usually as free-limited access rather than free-full access. Fully free availability is rare, with most core features below 6% free-full among apps that offer them.

Free-limited is the real default in this category. Guided lesson paths are free-limited in 60% of present implementations, grammar in 54.5%, audio-first recall in 56.6%, and travel phrases in 54.3%.

Gamification is the closest thing to a feature that apps give away generously. It has the highest free-full share in the dataset at 12.2% among apps that include it, which makes sense because badges, streaks, and points support retention without exposing expensive content or feedback.

Spaced repetition looks broadly accessible but not broadly free-full. It is free-limited in 51 of the 109 apps that include it, while only 4 apps make it fully free, so most products let learners start reviewing but not necessarily scale usage without friction.

Speech recognition is the opposite of a default free feature. Only 1 of 79 present implementations is free-full, which signals that pronunciation feedback is either expensive, premium-positioned, or both.

The builder rule is to make early learning visible for free but not unlimited. Free lessons, review, audio, and motivation mechanics activate users; deeper volume, smarter feedback, and advanced speaking practice can stay paid.

Which features are most often limited, paywalled, or premium-only in language learning apps?

The most aggressively gated features in language learning apps are AI roleplay, speech recognition, audio-first recall, and travel phrases. AI roleplay has 0% free-full availability, while speech recognition has only 1 free-full case across 79 present implementations.

AI roleplay is the cleanest premium feature because no app in the dataset gives it away fully. It is split between free-limited and paid-only access, which suggests the market is still testing whether to sell it as a teaser or a hard upgrade.

Speech recognition is also premium-skewed. Among apps that offer pronunciation feedback, 32.9% are paid-only and 19% are unclear, which means buyers often need to test or inspect plan details before knowing what feedback they actually get.

Travel phrases look simple, but the dataset shows they are monetized more aggressively than many curriculum features. Among apps that offer them, 34.3% are paid-only, which reflects their practical use case for travelers who may be willing to pay at the moment of need.

Restricted access is concentrated in writing systems and media learning rather than the core curriculum. Writing systems have a 23.1% restricted share among present implementations, while video subtitles and media learning have a 9.7% restricted share.

Free-limited caps remain the largest gating layer across the market. Language learning apps usually do not hide every feature from free users; they expose the feature, then restrict lessons, languages, volume, feedback depth, or daily usage.

Knowing what to charge for is half the job. The other half is getting seen: our database of 450+ businesses breaks down how each one brings in customers.

Which features still set language learning apps apart?

The strongest differentiators in language learning apps are AI roleplay, native speaker correction, writing-system practice, graded reading, and media learning. They either sit below 45% penetration overall or cluster sharply in specific workflows, which makes them more useful for positioning than table-stakes features.

AI roleplay differentiates outside AI speaking coaching. It appears in 96% of AI speaking apps, but only 13% of language-specific mastery apps and 6% of immersive media apps, so adding it in those workflows creates a more visible contrast.

Native speaker correction is a strong differentiator almost everywhere except human exchange apps. All 5 human exchange apps include it, but only 13 of 127 apps do overall, which makes the feature rare outside community-led products.

Writing-system practice differentiates most clearly in script-heavy language products. Language-specific mastery apps include it at 41%, while AI speaking apps and vocabulary apps sit at 7%, which makes the feature especially relevant for Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and similar learning contexts.

Graded reading is a workflow-defining differentiator for immersive media apps. It appears in 89% of that workflow, compared with 35% of structured course apps and 30% of AI speaking apps.

Video and media learning is a differentiator for structured course and language-specific apps because adoption is only 20% and 15% respectively in those categories. A product like Lingopie or FluentU uses media as the center of gravity, while most general apps treat it as optional.

Which features are rarely offered in language learning apps?

The rarest features in language learning apps are native speaker community corrections, writing systems and stroke practice, video subtitles and media learning, and AI roleplay. Native speaker correction is the extreme case, appearing in only 10.2% of the dataset.

Native speaker correction is rare because it requires a community, moderation, or human feedback loop. Apps like HelloTalk, Tandem, Speaky, Hilokal, and Busuu show the model, but most self-study products avoid the operational burden.

Writing systems and stroke practice appear in 26 of 127 apps. That low overall share is not a sign of weak value; it reflects the fact that the feature only matters for certain languages and scripts.

Video subtitles and media learning appear in 31 apps, making the feature rarer than many builders might expect. Even within immersive media comprehension, only 56% of apps offer video subtitles and media learning, suggesting that some media-led products are reading-led or audio-led rather than video-led.

AI roleplay is still rare across the full market even though it dominates AI speaking apps. Its 36.2% penetration means most language learning apps have not yet rebuilt their practice loop around open-ended conversation.

The important reading is that rarity in language learning apps is not always a weakness signal. Sometimes it marks a feature as workflow-specific, language-specific, or operationally expensive.

Which missing features create the biggest opportunity in language learning apps?

The biggest missing-feature opportunity in language learning apps is the combination of structured progression, AI roleplay, and human-style correction. The dataset shows each component separately, but few products combine all three deeply enough to own the full practice-to-feedback loop.

Structured progression is common, AI roleplay is growing, and native speaker correction is rare. Putting them together would create a product that teaches, simulates real conversation, and gives learners correction that feels social or human rather than purely automated.

Human exchange apps point to the opportunity from one side. They have 100% native-speaker correction and 60% AI roleplay coverage, but they are less defined by guided lesson paths, with only 1 of 5 including that feature.

AI speaking apps point to the opportunity from the other side. They almost all include roleplay and speech recognition, but only 1 of 27 includes native-speaker correction, which leaves a gap for hybrid AI plus community feedback.

Immersive media apps also leave an opening. They are strong in graded reading and spaced repetition, but almost never include AI roleplay, which means learners can understand content without necessarily converting it into active conversation practice.

The best opportunity is not to add a random rare feature. It is to connect features that already have proven demand but usually live in separate workflow families.

A sharp product still needs a way in front of buyers. See how 450+ businesses did it in our database, channel by channel.

What should be free versus paid in language learning apps?

In language learning apps, the free tier should expose the basic learning loop: short lessons, limited review, simple grammar, basic audio, and motivation mechanics. The paid tier can safely hold advanced speaking feedback, AI roleplay depth, larger content libraries, structured programs, and practical conversation packages.

The dataset supports a free-limited core rather than a fully free core. Guided lessons, grammar, audio recall, and travel phrases all lean free-limited, which tells builders to expose the product experience without giving away unlimited progress.

Spaced repetition should usually be accessible, but capped. Learners need to feel the memory loop early, yet only 4 of 109 present implementations are fully free, so unlimited review does not have to be part of the free promise.

Gamification can be more open than content or feedback. Its 12.2% free-full share is the highest among tracked features, and the feature mainly increases habit formation rather than directly consuming expert, AI, or media costs.

Speech recognition and AI roleplay are safer paid features. Speech recognition has the lowest fully-free share, and AI roleplay has none at all, so buyers already expect the best speaking practice to sit behind limits or payment.

The practical rule is simple: free should make the learner believe the method works; paid should unlock intensity, realism, personalization, and continuity.

Which features make users upgrade to paid plans in language learning apps?

Users upgrade in language learning apps when they hit limits on high-frequency learning loops or want higher-value speaking practice. The clearest upgrade features are AI roleplay, speech recognition, audio-first recall, larger lesson paths, and travel or survival-language packages.

Volume caps on common features create early upgrade pressure. Guided lesson paths, grammar, spaced repetition, and audio recall are widely present, but most are free-limited rather than free-full, which lets apps monetize regular usage.

AI roleplay creates a stronger capability upgrade. It is not fully free anywhere in the dataset, and 19 of 46 present implementations are paid-only, so it can mark the move from passive study into simulated conversation.

Speech recognition works as a premium upgrade because pronunciation feedback is visible and personal. Apps like ELSA Speak, Speak, Loora, Praktika, and Talkio AI show how speaking-focused products can make feedback central to paid value.

Travel phrases can also convert because the job is immediate. When a learner needs survival language for a trip, paywalled practical content feels less optional than abstract curriculum expansion.

The strongest upgrade path combines frequency and value. Limit the features learners use daily, then reserve the features that feel more expert, personal, or conversational for paid plans.

What should the MVP of a language learning app include and what should it skip?

The MVP of a language learning app should include guided lessons, spaced repetition, grammar support, audio-first recall, and one workflow-specific anchor. It should skip native-speaker correction, broad video learning, and writing-system practice unless those features directly define the target workflow.

The five-feature launch baseline depends on scope, but general-purpose products need lessons, review, grammar, and audio. Each appears in more than 82% of the dataset, so skipping any one creates an immediate credibility gap.

The MVP also needs one clear anchor. An AI speaking app needs speech recognition and roleplay. An immersive media app needs graded reading or media comprehension. A Japanese or Chinese mastery app may need writing systems and script practice.

Structured course apps have the most demanding MVP bar. Because all 20 include guided lessons, spaced repetition, grammar, and gamification, a new structured course app must feel complete from the start.

Native speaker correction should usually be skipped at launch unless the product is explicitly a human exchange app. It is operationally heavy, rare overall, and 100% expected only inside that specific workflow.

Video subtitles, stroke practice, and AI roleplay should be treated as anchor features, not default checklist items. They are excellent when they define the product, but distracting when they do not match the chosen workflow.

What are other interesting feature patterns in language learning apps?

Beyond the headline findings, language learning apps show several quieter patterns around ambiguity, workflow boundaries, and the difference between advertised breadth and usable access.

Unclear packaging concentrates around features that are easy to imply but hard to define. Speech recognition has 15 unclear cases among present implementations, and spaced repetition has 16, which suggests vendors often describe practice loops without making access mechanics obvious.

Human exchange apps have a surprisingly broad profile in this dataset. They all include native speaker correction, grammar, audio-first recall, and travel phrases, which means community products increasingly package learning scaffolds around the social layer.

Audio speaking drill apps are tiny but coherent. The category has only 3 apps, yet all include guided lessons, grammar, audio-first recall, and travel phrases, while none include AI roleplay, native-speaker correction, video learning, or writing systems.

Language-specific mastery apps are the broadest long-tail workflow. They spread across lessons, grammar, audio, reading, gamification, and writing systems, but they under-index on speech recognition and travel phrases because many are built for scripts, exams, reading, or grammar depth.

AI speaking apps are less narrow than their name suggests. They have 93% coverage for grammar and audio-first recall, which means the strongest speaking products still rely on conventional learning infrastructure to make conversation practice usable.

Insights

We collected and analyzed the features of 127 language learning apps, then read the aggregates as a category map rather than a set of isolated feature counts. These are the higher-order patterns that emerge from the dataset.

  • Workflow is the strongest filter for interpreting language learning apps. The same feature can be table stakes in one workflow and irrelevant in another, which is why video subtitles, writing systems, AI roleplay, and native speaker correction should never be benchmarked without workflow context.
  • Language learning apps split into two broad product postures: curriculum-led products and practice-led products. Curriculum-led apps compete on lessons, grammar, review, and progression. Practice-led apps compete on speaking, correction, media, or exchange, then add enough curriculum scaffolding to keep users oriented.
  • The category's dominant monetization pattern is not hard exclusion. In language learning apps, features are usually visible before they are fully usable, which makes free-limited access the central packaging mechanic.
  • Core learning infrastructure and premium practice are different markets inside language learning apps. Lessons, grammar, review, and audio make a product legible. Speech recognition, AI roleplay, and human correction make it feel valuable enough to pay for.
  • AI speaking coaching is absorbing traditional course mechanics rather than replacing them. The high coverage of guided lessons, grammar, audio recall, and travel phrases inside AI speaking apps shows that conversation alone is not enough structure for most learners.
  • Human feedback remains the hardest feature to scale in language learning apps. Native speaker correction is rare overall, but universal in human exchange apps, which suggests the barrier is not learner demand but product model and operations.
  • Writing-system practice behaves like a language constraint, not a feature trend. In language learning apps, its value is concentrated where script mastery matters, so low total penetration should not be read as low importance.
  • Media learning is narrower than its cultural visibility suggests. Video subtitles and graded reading create strong products, but the dataset shows that comprehension-led learning is still a specialized workflow rather than the default app design.
  • Gamification is the lightest-weight retention layer across language learning apps. It is common, relatively open, and rarely the main paid value, which makes it useful for habit formation but weak as a standalone differentiator.
  • The strongest product opportunity in language learning apps sits between workflows, not inside a single feature column. Products that connect structured progression, AI conversation, and correction can cover a learner journey that most existing apps split across separate tools.

Methodology

We analyzed 127 language-learning apps based on publicly available information from their homepages, feature pages, app store listings, help centers, and pricing pages.

We define language learning apps as apps whose primary value proposition is to help users learn, practice, improve, or retain a foreign language through lessons, exercises, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, conversation, listening, reading, or spaced repetition.

We excluded generic education apps, tutoring apps, translation tools, dictionaries, AI chatbots, flashcard apps, and online course platforms unless language learning was a central advertised feature. For ambiguous apps, we included a product only if users would reasonably choose it primarily to learn a language rather than translate, study general subjects, or access tutoring.

Our dataset focuses only on tools that are sufficiently comparable for pricing and feature availability analysis. A small number of niche, regional, discontinued, newly launched, or insufficiently documented products may have been missed, but the dataset is designed to represent the most visible, relevant, and commercially meaningful products in the category rather than every marginal edge case.

The language-learning app category contains many individual features, often described with inconsistent terminology across vendors. To make the analysis readable and comparable, we grouped these capabilities into broader feature categories such as guided lesson paths, spaced repetition, pronunciation feedback, AI roleplay, native speaker correction, grammar drills, graded reading, media learning, audio recall, writing-system practice, gamification, and travel phrases.

This categorization avoids two common problems: treating every vendor-specific wording as a separate feature, which would make the analysis too fragmented, and using overly broad buckets, which would hide meaningful differences between products. The result is a market-level view that remains specific enough to support product, pricing, and positioning decisions.

For each feature, we applied a standardized availability label based on the information published by each vendor. Absent means the feature is not available, or does not appear to be available, based on public information. Free full means the feature is available for free without meaningful usage limits. Free limited means the feature is available for free, but with usage, volume, functionality, content, language, or access limits.

Paid only means the feature is available only through a paid plan or paid purchase. Trial only means the feature is available only during a free trial or temporary evaluation period. Restricted means the feature depends on a specific language, script, region, device, integration, partner, beta program, classroom or library access, or other restricted access condition. Unclear means the feature appears to be present, but public information does not clearly indicate whether it is free, paid, trial-based, limited, or restricted.

When public information was incomplete or ambiguous, we avoided inferring availability beyond what could reasonably be supported by the vendor's own pages. In those cases, we used the Unclear label rather than assuming that a feature was free, paid, or fully available.

All percentages are calculated from the retained dataset. For each feature, we report both the number and percentage of apps that offer the feature, and the availability mix among apps that offer it. When relevant, we also break these metrics down by primary workflow to distinguish category-wide table stakes from workflow-specific differentiators.
