We Compared The Features of 138 Entertainment Apps: Here's What We Found

Offline downloads are the clearest paid upgrade in entertainment apps, even though the category's visible baseline is already universal search, access, and multi-device support. We built the dataset ourselves across 138 entertainment apps, classified every feature with a seven-label availability scheme, and ran the aggregates to figure out what features actually matter and what to build if you're shipping your own Entertainment Apps.
The dataset spans six workflow families: stream movies and series, watch live TV and sports, listen to music and audio, read stories and comics, track and discover entertainment, and livestream and co-watch socially. The taxonomy captures the major consumption, discovery, community, access, and safety capabilities that define Entertainment Apps, with availability labels designed to reflect real packaging rather than marketing claims.

Summary
This study analyzes 138 Entertainment Apps across six workflow families: stream movies and series, watch live TV and sports, listen to music and audio, read stories and comics, track and discover entertainment, and livestream and co-watch socially. The dataset captures 12 feature categories and classifies each feature by availability so the analysis reflects actual packaging, not just whether a vendor mentions the feature.
Three features are universal across Entertainment Apps: subscription or ad-supported access, content library browsing and search, and multi-device streaming or casting, all present in 138 of 138 apps, which means a new product missing any of them starts below the category baseline.
Two more features are near-universal in Entertainment Apps. Personalized recommendations and watchlists each appear in 96% of the dataset, which confirms that discovery and saving behavior are no longer differentiators by themselves.
Library search is the clearest free baseline in Entertainment Apps. It is present in every app, and 72 of 138 apps make it free-full, which means search is the feature buyers most expect to try before paying.
Subscription and ad-supported access is universal but rarely fully free. Only 13 of 138 apps make core access free-full, while 85 use free-limited access, which confirms that entertainment products often monetize by exposing enough catalog, quality, or usage to hook the user.
Offline downloads are the strongest upgrade lever. They appear in 70% of Entertainment Apps, but 50 of the 97 apps with downloads make them paid only, which means offline access is widely understood as a premium convenience rather than a default right.
Multi-device streaming and casting is both table stakes and monetizable. It appears in 100% of the dataset, but 36 apps make it paid only and 19 restrict it, which means buyers expect the capability even when vendors keep full access behind a plan, device, or platform condition.
Creator publishing is the rarest capability in Entertainment Apps at 31% penetration. When it appears, 19 of 43 implementations are restricted and none are paid only, which suggests supply-side access is governed more by eligibility, partner rules, and creator programs than by simple pricing.
Parental controls are underdeveloped at 38% penetration, which creates a visible gap for family-oriented Entertainment Apps. The feature is also opaque, with 20 of 52 present implementations marked unclear, which means public packaging often fails to explain household safety controls.
Workflow changes the meaning of almost every feature. Ratings and community appear in 89% of tracking apps but 0% of live TV apps, while offline playback appears in 93% of movie, audio, and story workflows but 0% of co-watch apps, which means builders should benchmark against their workflow before copying category-wide averages.
Movie and live TV apps monetize core usage most aggressively. Movie and series apps make downloads paid only in 25 of 43 present cases, and live TV apps make seven core features paid only in 4 of 7 apps, which confirms that expensive content rights push Entertainment Apps toward paid-first packaging.
Social features are common but under-specified. They appear in 95 apps, yet 29 of those cases are unclear, which suggests many vendors market sharing or community broadly without explaining whether the feature is public, private, free, capped, or tied to a platform.

We built this dataset from scratch. For each of the 138 Entertainment Apps, we inspected public feature information and recorded the availability of 12 feature categories: subscription and ad-supported access, content library browsing and search, personalized recommendations, watchlists and saved favorites, offline downloads, multi-device streaming and casting, live channels and scheduled programming, ratings and community profiles, social sharing and watch parties, creator publishing, accessibility controls, and parental controls. We also captured the primary workflow and business model. Each feature was classified with one of seven standardized labels: Absent, Free full, Free limited, Paid only, Trial only, Restricted, or Unclear. The full comparison table is below.

- Accessibility sits in an awkward middle ground across Entertainment Apps. It is common enough to be expected, but paywalled and unclear often enough to feel inconsistent. Clear, visible accessibility packaging could become a trust signal even when the feature itself is not novel.
- The best feature opportunities in Entertainment Apps are not rare features everywhere. They are features that are table stakes in one workflow and absent in a neighboring workflow where the user job still makes sense. That is where product scope inertia creates openings for focused entrants.
Methodology
We analyzed 138 Entertainment Apps based on publicly available information from their homepages, feature pages, pricing pages, app store descriptions, help centers, and product documentation where available.
We define Entertainment Apps as apps whose primary value proposition is to help users consume, discover, create, play, share, or engage with entertainment content, including video, music, games, streaming, live content, humor, fandom, celebrity, media, or interactive experiences. We exclude generic social apps, gaming apps, music production tools, education apps, fitness apps, shopping apps, and productivity apps unless entertainment consumption or engagement is the central advertised feature. For ambiguous apps, we include them only if users would reasonably choose the product primarily for entertainment rather than learning, productivity, commerce, or communication.
The dataset includes apps across six primary workflow families: stream movies and series, watch live TV and sports, listen to music and audio, read stories and comics, track and discover entertainment, and livestream and co-watch socially. These workflows are grouped together because they share a consumer entertainment logic, but they are analyzed separately where workflow differences materially affect feature availability or packaging.
We excluded generic social networks, generic creator tools, broad productivity products, general app stores, device operating systems, telecom bundles, standalone media players, music production tools, gaming products, education apps, fitness apps, shopping apps, and productivity apps unless entertainment discovery, consumption, tracking, streaming, reading, listening, sharing, or co-watching was presented as a central advertised use case.
For ambiguous cases, we included an app only when a buyer or user would reasonably describe it as an Entertainment App rather than as a general social, utility, publishing, device, learning, commerce, communication, or infrastructure product.
We focused the analysis on 138 apps because the sample captures the most visible, relevant, and commercially meaningful products across the entertainment-app landscape. Some niche, regional, newly launched, or declining products may have been missed, but the dataset is designed to represent the competitive structure of the category rather than every marginal edge case.
The Entertainment Apps category includes many individual features, often described with inconsistent terminology across vendors. To make the analysis readable and comparable, we grouped these features into 12 broader feature categories: subscription and ad-supported access; content library browsing and search; personalized recommendations and discovery feeds; watchlists, queues, and saved favorites; offline downloads and mobile playback; multi-device streaming and casting; live channels, events, and scheduled programming; ratings, reviews, and community profiles; social sharing, comments, and watch parties; creator uploads, publishing, and monetization; lyrics, subtitles, and accessibility controls; and parental controls or age-based profiles.
This categorization avoids two common problems: treating every vendor-specific wording as a separate feature, which would make the analysis too fragmented, and using overly broad buckets, which would obscure meaningful differences between products. For example, watchlist, queue, saved shows, and favorites were grouped together because they serve the same user job, while creator publishing and social sharing were kept separate because they reflect different product capabilities and monetization dynamics.
For each feature, we applied a standardized availability label based on information published by each vendor. Absent means the feature is not available, or does not appear to be available, based on public information. Free full means the feature is available for free without meaningful usage limits. Free limited means the feature is available for free, but with usage, catalog, quality, volume, functionality, advertising, device, or access limits.
Paid only means the feature is available only through a paid subscription, paid tier, paid add-on, rental, purchase, or other paid access model. Trial only means the feature is available only during a free trial or temporary evaluation period. Restricted means the feature depends on a specific region, device, library card, partner bundle, creator program, rights window, platform integration, beta program, or other restricted access condition. Unclear means the feature appears to be present, but public information does not clearly indicate whether it is free, paid, trial-based, limited, or restricted.
When public information was incomplete or ambiguous, we avoided inferring availability beyond what could reasonably be supported by vendor-controlled or app-store-visible information. In those cases, we used the Unclear label rather than assuming that a feature was free, paid, or fully available.
When a tool showed anomalous, non-comparable, or insufficiently supported information, we excluded the line from downstream interpretation. This keeps the analysis focused on comparable product capabilities rather than vendor-specific wording or incomplete public claims.
For each feature, we calculated two levels of metrics. First, we measured feature penetration: the number and percentage of apps that appear to offer the feature across the full 138-app dataset. Second, among only the apps that offer the feature, we measured how availability is distributed across free full, free limited, paid only, trial only, restricted, and unclear access models. We then repeated the same analysis by primary workflow category to separate broad market norms from workflow-specific norms.
