SUMMARY

Yes. Chrome extensions are getting too crowded for generic products, but focused extensions built around specific workflows still have plenty of room.

The headline catalog size exaggerates the competitive pressure a little. Chrome-Stats counted roughly a quarter of a million current Manifest V3 extensions, yet about three-quarters of a comparable cohort had not even reached 100 displayed users.

The store is crowded unevenly. Tools absorbs a huge share of listings but a much smaller share of displayed-user attention, while Workflow & Planning and Privacy & Security attract far more usage relative to their supply.

AI has made the weakest part of the market much worse. Generic summarizers, sidebars, rewriting tools and page assistants can be built faster than before, while established products such as Sider and Monica already carry millions of users and large rating histories.

Chrome itself is also moving into extension territory. Gemini features, AI Mode, reusable Skills and automated browsing increasingly cover jobs that used to justify a standalone productivity or AI extension.

Discovery has become a chicken-and-egg problem. Chrome rewards evidence of useful adoption, but new extensions need outside distribution, social proof or an existing audience to generate that adoption in the first place.

Trust is becoming part of the competitive moat. Permissions, developer reputation, privacy practices, update history and Safe Browsing warnings can make an unknown extension feel riskier than a normal web app, especially when it asks for broad page access.

The ceiling is still very high, just brutally concentrated. Only a few hundred current Manifest V3 extensions have crossed one million displayed users, yet newer AI products have still reached hundreds of thousands or several million users during this crowded period.

The better business model increasingly looks like SaaS with an extension at the front door. Surfe is a good example: the browser workflow helps acquisition and daily usage, while the larger business comes from deeper integrations, data and workflow ownership.

The strongest remaining opportunities are usually narrow and a bit boring: one repeated task, inside one browser-heavy profession or website, for users who already feel the pain and can be reached outside Web Store search.

The practical line is clear. Building another interchangeable utility and hoping Chrome sends traffic is a weak bet; building a specialized workflow product with its own distribution, trust and data can still become a serious business.

Are there simply too many Chrome extensions now?

Yes. The Chrome Web Store is genuinely crowded today, with roughly a quarter of a million current Manifest V3 extensions fighting for attention.

Chrome-Stats counted 246,421 current Manifest V3 extensions in one of its latest full category snapshots. Tools alone contained 94,886 listings. Workflow & Planning had another 41,758. Developer Tools added roughly another tenth of the store.

Those numbers make Chrome look brutally saturated until we look at how many extensions actually have an audience. In a separate Chrome-Stats snapshot of 242,427 current Manifest V3 listings, only 62,827 had reached at least 100 displayed users. Roughly three out of four extensions were therefore still below that very modest threshold.

The old Manifest V2 catalog made the store look even fuller than the active market really was. Shortly before Google removed those legacy listings, Chrome-Stats still found 44,537 of them. Yet 98.6% had gone without an update since before 2024, and together they represented only 2.5% of the combined displayed-user count across the measured Manifest V2 and V3 extensions.

So yes, Chrome has accumulated an enormous amount of software. The number of extensions that have actually attracted meaningful usage is dramatically smaller.

Is Chrome still big enough for new extension businesses?

Absolutely. Chrome extensions are competing inside one of the largest software distribution environments in the world, so the audience itself is nowhere close to being exhausted.

Chrome continues to dominate global browser usage, particularly on desktop, where extensions matter most. That gives even extremely narrow products plenty of room. A Chrome extension never needs anything close to mass adoption to become a serious small software business.

The existing winners show how large the ceiling remains. Grammarly's Chrome extension has around 40 million displayed users. Sider currently shows 5 million. Monica has 3 million. HARPA AI has 400,000, while Eightify has 200,000.

Those last four examples are especially interesting because they all grew during the recent AI wave. They entered a market where users already had ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and dozens of AI browser tools available.

The problem today is finding a compelling reason for people to install one more extension. There are still more than enough Chrome users once that reason exists.

Which Chrome extension categories are actually overcrowded?

Tools is by far the clearest overcrowded category, while several smaller Chrome extension categories attract far more users per listing.

Chrome-Stats' recent category analysis makes the imbalance unusually clear. Tools contained 38.5% of current Manifest V3 extensions but only 14.3% of the aggregate displayed-user count in the dataset.

Workflow & Planning looked almost opposite. It represented 16.9% of listings while accounting for 43.9% of aggregate displayed users. Privacy & Security was even more extreme: roughly 2% of listings captured 15.3% of displayed-user volume.

We should be careful with those totals because one person can use several extensions, and Chrome's public user figures are rounded. They are still useful for comparing how audience attention is distributed across categories.

The interesting finding is that extension supply and user demand are badly mismatched. Builders have piled disproportionately into broad tools, while some smaller categories support much larger audiences relative to their supply.

That makes “there are already thousands of extensions” a weak way to judge an idea. The better question is how many credible products already solve that exact problem.

Has AI made Chrome extensions much more crowded?

Yes. AI has made Chrome extension competition noticeably worse because developers can build basic products faster while thousands of them are chasing the same obvious ideas.

Look at the current AI sidebar market. Sider has 5 million Chrome users and more than 114,000 ratings. Monica has 3 million users and more than 32,000 ratings. HARPA AI has around 400,000 users. All three combine some version of chatting, writing, summarizing, translating, searching and working with several AI models.

A few years ago, putting ChatGPT beside a webpage felt like a product idea. Now it is basically a product category.

AI coding has also lowered the amount of work required to enter that category. Building a popup, injecting a sidebar, reading page context and connecting an LLM API can now be done much faster than during the previous extension cycle. Microsoft has even discussed the operational pressure created by growing volumes of AI-generated extension submissions in its own Edge ecosystem.

The hard part has moved. Coding the first version is increasingly cheap; distribution, repeated workflow value, trust and something competitors cannot copy next weekend matter much more.

Generic AI extension ideas are among the most crowded opportunities in the Chrome ecosystem right now.

Is Chrome itself becoming a threat to Chrome extensions?

Yes. Chrome is currently absorbing several jobs that previously gave standalone AI and productivity extensions a reason to exist.

Gemini in Chrome can already understand webpages, summarize long content, compare information across tabs and work with Google services such as Gmail, Calendar, Maps and YouTube. Google has also expanded AI Mode directly inside Chrome so people can research alongside the page they are viewing.

More recently, Google introduced Skills in Chrome. Users can save useful AI prompts and run them again on webpages with one click. Chrome's auto-browse capabilities go further by handling multi-step web tasks such as researching options, changing recurring orders or beginning bookings.

Each feature attacks a slightly different extension use case. Together they cover a surprisingly large portion of what generic AI sidebars have been selling.

Simple AI wrappers are riskier now. A developer can spend months acquiring users for a feature that later appears beside the address bar with no installation required.

The safer opportunities sit deeper inside specialized work. Google has little incentive to build a detailed extension for one recruiting workflow, one ecommerce process, one internal enterprise system or one niche professional dataset.

Can a new Chrome extension still get discovered?

Yes, although Chrome Web Store discovery increasingly favors extensions that already show evidence that users want to keep them.

Google says Web Store ranking uses ratings and usage statistics such as downloads relative to uninstalls. Listing quality, usability and whether the extension clearly solves a user need also influence discovery and featuring.

That creates an awkward starting point for a new developer. Strong usage helps an extension become more visible, while visibility itself helps generate usage.

Established products bring another advantage: social proof. Sider currently shows more than 114,000 ratings. Monica has more than 32,000. A new AI assistant sitting beside those products can look unproven even when its software is excellent.

Chrome-Stats quantified how large that gap becomes. Among extensions with 100 to 999 displayed users, the median listing had only two ratings. At 10,000 to 99,999 users, the median was 49. Among extensions above one million users, it jumped to 1,997.

Google's own developer guidance tells publishers seeking more visibility to promote extensions outside the Web Store as well. That advice says a lot about how distribution works today.

Store search can still produce installs, but relying on Chrome to create the initial audience has become a fragile launch strategy. Communities, SEO, creators, an existing SaaS product, partnerships or another distribution channel can give a new extension the push that the store increasingly expects to see first.

Are users becoming more cautious about installing Chrome extensions?

Yes. Trust is a bigger hurdle for unknown Chrome extensions now because users and Chrome itself are more visibly sensitive to permissions, security and developer reputation.

A browser extension can potentially see webpages, interact with tabs or access information users type into sites. That level of access naturally raises the stakes compared with trying an ordinary website.

Google has made the risk much more visible. Enhanced Safe Browsing can warn users about extensions Chrome does not yet consider trusted. Google explains that a new developer generally needs a period of compliant history before earning that status.

Chrome also warns users when an installed extension disappears from the Web Store because of policy problems, malware findings or other removal reasons. Safety has become part of the user-facing extension experience rather than something happening entirely behind Google's review process.

Manifest V3 reinforces the same direction. Executable extension logic has to be packaged in a way Google can inspect, and remotely hosted code faces much tighter restrictions than under the older extension model.

For legitimate developers, the higher trust bar can actually help. A recognizable publisher, sensible permissions, regular updates, good support and a transparent privacy policy stand out more in a store filled with quickly generated products.

Unknown extensions asking for broad access have a much harder sell today.

Can new Chrome extensions still reach millions of users?

Yes. Newer Chrome extensions are still reaching enormous audiences, although million-user outcomes remain exceptionally rare.

Chrome-Stats found only 339 current Manifest V3 extensions with at least one million displayed users in its rating benchmark. That came from a measured universe exceeding 240,000 listings.

At the same time, several products from the recent AI generation have reached serious scale. Sider currently shows 5 million users, Monica 3 million, HARPA AI 400,000 and Eightify 200,000.

The distribution is therefore extremely uneven. Most extensions struggle to get beyond a tiny audience, while a small number become products used by hundreds of thousands or millions of people.

This is closer to the economics of mobile apps than the old image of browser extensions as little utilities discovered casually in a store.

Publishing an extension has become easy. Getting 10,000 people to keep using one is already a meaningful achievement.

Can Chrome extensions still make serious money?

Yes. Chrome extensions can still support substantial businesses, especially when the browser extension sits inside a larger subscription product.

The Chrome Web Store no longer provides the old native paid-extension system, so serious developers usually handle billing themselves. That has pushed successful extensions toward SaaS-style subscriptions, team plans and products that continue outside the extension.

Surfe is a useful example. The company started around a browser-based sales workflow and eventually expanded into CRM integrations, contact data and a broader sales platform. Company executives have publicly discussed reaching roughly $15 million in ARR and around 10,000 paying customers.

That trajectory tells us more than the revenue number itself. The Chrome extension gave Surfe a convenient place to enter the user's workflow, while the larger business came from owning more of the sales process.

Specialist monetization providers also report thousands of extensions already charging subscriptions, although those datasets cover their own ecosystems rather than every Chrome extension and should be read accordingly.

For a small developer, the basic economics can still work at far smaller scale. A product charging $10 to $20 per month does not need millions of users. A few hundred paying customers can already create a meaningful business.

The harder question today is whether the extension solves something painful enough to keep people paying every month.

Which Chrome extension ideas are hardest to launch now?

Generic AI sidebars, basic summarizers, common tab tools and simple utilities are among the hardest Chrome extension ideas to launch today because users already have endless alternatives.

Tools alone contains almost 95,000 current Manifest V3 extensions. That category includes many of the ideas founders naturally think of first: screenshots, downloads, productivity widgets, page helpers, tab utilities and lightweight AI features.

AI has intensified the problem. Page summaries, text rewriting, translation, PDF chat and multi-model sidebars already appear in established products with hundreds of thousands or millions of users. Chrome itself is simultaneously adding several of those capabilities.

The common trait among weak opportunities is replaceability. When users can find ten visually similar options after one Web Store search, pricing and distribution become much harder even if the product works perfectly.

A tiny extension can still be excellent. The dangerous idea is one whose entire advantage disappears as soon as another developer copies the interface and connects the same APIs.

Where is there still room for new Chrome extensions?

There is still plenty of room for Chrome extensions built around narrow, repeated workflows, especially when the problem belongs to a specific profession, website or market.

A recruiter who spends hours inside LinkedIn has different browser problems from an ecommerce operator working in Shopify, a salesperson living inside Salesforce or a financial analyst collecting information from industry portals. An extension can become unusually valuable when it removes friction directly where that work already happens.

The Web Store category data points in the same direction. Workflow & Planning commands far more displayed-user volume than its share of listings would suggest. Privacy & Security also attracts a disproportionately large audience relative to the number of extensions available.

International markets may add another layer of opportunity. In a recent Chrome-Stats study, multilingual extensions had a median of 72 displayed users versus 11 for single-language extensions. Around 23% of multilingual products reached at least 1,000 users, compared with 8.1% of single-language ones.

We should not claim that translation caused that difference. Successful products have more resources to localize, and larger teams may target more countries from the beginning. Still, the gap is large enough to make English-only competition an incomplete picture of the market.

Sider supports dozens of languages. HARPA AI does as well, while Eightify advertises summaries and translations in more than 40. Global distribution can widen the opportunity considerably when the product itself deserves the effort.

The best remaining ideas often look almost boring from the outside: one annoying task, performed frequently, by a specific group of people willing to pay to remove it.

Can a Chrome extension still build a real moat?

Yes, although the durable advantage usually comes from everything surrounding the Chrome extension rather than from the extension code itself.

Browser extension interfaces are relatively easy to inspect and imitate. AI coding tools make that copying faster. Manifest V3 also requires executable logic to remain reviewable inside the submitted extension package, which limits some ways developers previously hid important functionality.

The stronger products therefore build defensibility elsewhere.

Grammarly has technology, brand, user history, enterprise distribution and products across multiple platforms. Copying its Chrome interface would reproduce almost none of that.

Surfe built CRM integrations, sales data and workflow depth around its browser experience. HARPA AI has expanded from basic AI assistance toward monitoring and web automation. These products become harder to replace as more of the user's workflow moves through them.

A useful test is simple: imagine a competitor recreates the visible Chrome extension next weekend. How much of the real product would they have copied?

When the answer is “almost everything,” the idea is exposed.

Are Chrome extensions getting too crowded?

The catalog has passed roughly a quarter of a million current Manifest V3 extensions. Tools alone contains almost 95,000. AI has lowered the cost of building basic extensions, established winners carry huge rating histories, and Chrome itself is absorbing summarization, AI assistance, reusable workflows and automated browsing.

Those changes make the easiest extension ideas much worse businesses than they used to be.

But the deeper numbers keep us from declaring the whole market saturated. Roughly three-quarters of current Manifest V3 listings appear to sit below 100 displayed users. Only 339 extensions in Chrome-Stats' measured cohort had crossed one million. Meanwhile, products such as Sider and Monica have still reached several million users during one of the most competitive periods the ecosystem has seen.

As seen above, the category data also shows that crowding varies enormously. Tools contains far more supply than its share of user attention would suggest, while Workflow & Planning and Privacy & Security attract disproportionate audiences.

So we would draw the line quite clearly.

If the plan is to build another generic summarizer, AI sidebar, tab manager or tiny utility and hope Chrome Web Store search sends users, Chrome is already painfully crowded.

If the extension removes a recurring problem for a specific group, fits naturally into a workflow people already perform in the browser and has a way to reach those users outside store search, the opportunity is still very real.

Chrome extensions have become easier to make and much harder to win with.

OUR METHODOLOGY

“Are Chrome extensions getting too crowded?” sounds like a simple question, but raw extension counts do not answer it. A large catalog can mean intense competition, a huge long tail of abandoned products, fragmented demand, or some combination of all three. We therefore treated crowding as something to investigate rather than assume.

We broke the question into several dimensions: active supply, how much of that supply has attracted meaningful usage, how attention is distributed across categories, how difficult discovery has become, how trust and platform changes affect new entrants, and whether successful extensions can still build meaningful businesses and durable advantages.

For each dimension, we used the freshest source that could answer that part of the question. We prioritized Chrome Web Store observations, live extension listings, Google and Microsoft platform documentation, current browser-market data and first-hand company disclosures. Older material was used only when it established a policy or structural change that still matters.

For store-wide measurements, we relied on Chrome-Stats snapshots as structured observations of the Chrome Web Store. We kept the comparison set aligned with the question: current Manifest V3 extensions for the active catalog, displayed-user figures for visible adoption, category shares for supply versus attention, and audience bands for rating benchmarks. Displayed-user totals were treated as comparative store signals rather than counts of unique people.

We separated the active market from historical catalog accumulation. Legacy Manifest V2 listings helped explain why the store could appear larger than the genuinely competitive market, but we did not treat them as equivalent to current Manifest V3 products when assessing present-day crowding.

Thresholds such as 100 users or one million users were used as analytical markers, not definitions of success or failure. Their purpose was to show the shape of the distribution: how much of the catalog has barely established an audience, and how rare very large outcomes remain.

Aggregate data was then checked against concrete products. Grammarly helped establish the scale ceiling, while Sider, Monica, HARPA AI and Eightify tested whether newer extensions can still reach substantial audiences in a much more competitive environment. Surfe was used as a business-model example because its extension sits inside a broader paid sales product.

Where a relationship showed correlation rather than causation, we kept that distinction intact. The multilingual-extension comparison, for example, was useful for testing whether opportunity extends beyond English-only competition, but we did not treat localization itself as the proven cause of higher adoption.

We did not reduce the analysis to an arbitrary composite score. The conclusion came from convergence across catalog size, usage distribution, category economics, platform behavior, discovery dynamics, trust, monetization and real product outcomes.
