Chrome currently accounts for 73.28% of worldwide desktop browsing, according to Statcounter. Edge adds another 10.46%, and both browsers run on Chromium. For many extensions, that means one core product can work across more than four-fifths of desktop browsing with relatively limited adaptation.

The current Chrome Web Store also gives us a useful reality check. Grammarly still shows 40 million users. Dark Reader has 7 million. Wappalyzer has 3 million. Language Reactor has 2 million. Similarweb, HubSpot Sales and Scribe each have about 1 million. Hunter has 600,000, Salesforce Inspector Reloaded 500,000 and Bardeen 200,000.

Those products solve completely different problems, which is more interesting than the raw totals. Writing, accessibility, technology research, language learning, sales, documentation, prospecting, Salesforce administration and automation can all support meaningful extension adoption.

The harder part now is distribution. A useful extension can sit almost invisible among thousands of similar tools. The winners increasingly bring their own acquisition engine through an existing SaaS product, Google searches around a painful problem, professional communities, content, enterprise deployment or a strong position inside one software ecosystem.

Salesforce Inspector Reloaded is a good example. Its current Chrome listing shows about 500,000 users even though its audience is basically limited to Salesforce administrators and developers. It helps them inspect data and metadata, run queries, examine logs, navigate setup, analyze fields and perform other tasks directly from Salesforce.

HubSpot Sales reaches about 1 million users with the same broad principle. It puts CRM and sales functionality inside Gmail and the rest of the web instead of constantly sending the salesperson back to another dashboard.

The opportunity gets especially interesting when the job involves several web applications at once. A recruiter might move between LinkedIn, an applicant-tracking system and Gmail. A procurement employee might move between supplier websites, internal purchasing software and spreadsheets. A support agent may jump between Zendesk, an account dashboard, Stripe and internal documentation.

A good extension can remove those jumps.

Yes, but broad browser automation is becoming much harder to defend. Specialized automation still has plenty of room.

Google's auto-browse feature can already handle multi-step web tasks such as comparing products, finding deals, adding items to a cart, searching for accommodation and making appointments. Chrome Enterprise documentation also shows auto browse being developed for managed business users, subject to administrator controls.

That puts pressure on extensions whose pitch amounts to “tell the AI what to click.”

Bardeen gives us a better picture of where the category can go. Its current extension has around 200,000 users and combines web extraction, browser actions and integrations with other applications. Scribe, with roughly 1 million users, watches workflows and turns what happened in the browser into process documentation that teams can reuse.

Push the same approach further into a profession and it becomes more interesting. A freight broker could extract shipment details from carrier portals and push them into a transport-management system. An ecommerce operator could compare marketplace listings with internal pricing rules. A claims employee could gather information from an insurer's web portals and prepare the required case record.

Chrome may eventually become very good at clicking through websites. It still will not automatically know every company's approval logic, database structure, exceptions, customer history and internal workflow.

The durable opportunity is automation with domain knowledge.

All three use the webpage as a starting point. The valuable output goes beyond copying what is visibly written there.

That distinction is going to become even more important as AI agents get better at extracting tables, text and page structure. “Export this webpage to CSV” has little protection. “Tell me everything relevant about this supplier, property, company, product or prospect while I am looking at it” can become a much deeper business if the extension owns the enrichment data.

Real-estate listings could be combined with previous transactions, rental estimates and zoning information. Ecommerce pages could gain price histories and compatibility checks. Are coupon and shopping extensions still worth building?

Yes, but a generic coupon finder is a poor bet now. Shopping extensions get much more interesting when the purchase is expensive or difficult to compare.

No for normal productivity products. The bigger impact is that Chrome is steadily removing room for extensions that rely on excessive permissions or opaque behavior.

Manifest V3 replaced persistent background pages with service workers, banned remotely hosted executable code and changed the way extensions can intercept and modify network requests. Products built around unusual network control have had to adapt the most.
