We Compared The Pricing of 105 AI Writing Tools: Here's What We Found

Last updated: May 25, 2026

AI writing tools are one of the most crowded and price-sensitive software categories in AI SaaS. We pulled the public pricing pages of 105 AI writing and content tools ourselves, decomposed every product into the same comparable dimensions, and ran the aggregates to understand what actually works in pricing in this category and what to copy if you're building in this space.

The dataset spans eight workflow families: general marketing copy and content suites, SEO and long-form content, humanization, rewriting and proofreading, academic and essay writing, creative writing and storytelling, writing assistants and productivity tools, email and outreach writing, and ecommerce, ads and performance copy. For each AI writing tool, we recorded the same core pricing dimensions: name, primary workflow, pricing model, cheapest monthly plan, most expensive monthly plan, free plan, free trial, credit card requirement, monthly billing option, annual discount, enterprise or custom pricing availability, free plan limitations, paid-plan unlocks, and upgrade triggers.

Summary

This study analyzes the pricing of 105 AI writing tools captured from their public pricing pages. We included tools whose primary value proposition is AI-assisted writing, rewriting, editing, polishing, summarizing, personalizing, or content generation, and the dataset captures pricing model, entry price, top public price, free access, annual discounting, enterprise availability, free-plan limits, paid unlocks, and upgrade triggers.

Entry pricing in AI writing tools is lower than many founders expect. The median cheapest paid plan is $19 per month and the average is $29.34 after excluding one enterprise-like $750 outlier, which means the category is anchored around low-friction individual adoption rather than premium entry pricing.

The $29 threshold matters more than the $79 threshold. 69.9% of AI writing tools start below $29 per month and 83.5% start below $79, which means a first paid plan above $79 immediately pushes a product into the premium-entry minority.

Top public pricing is much more aggressive than entry pricing. The median most expensive public plan is $64 per month but the average reaches $196.67, which confirms the market has a cheap-entry, steep-expansion shape.

SEO, programmatic content, and GTM workflows create the biggest pricing headroom inside AI writing tools. SEO and long-form content has a median top plan of $199 and an average of $792.80, which means business-output categories can monetize far beyond generic writing assistance.

Free plans are slightly more common than free trials. 55.8% of AI writing tools offer a free plan while 52.4% offer a free trial, which suggests the category leans toward controlled ongoing access rather than pure time-boxed evaluation.

Trials are short when they are stated. The estimated average free trial length is about seven days, the typical range is three to seven days, and the full observed range is one to twenty-one days, which means long trials are the exception rather than the default.

Credit-card-gated trials are a minority mechanic. Among tools where the requirement is knowable, only 23.9% require a credit card for the free trial, which means no-card evaluation is a normal expectation in AI writing tools.

Annual discounting clusters around the standard SaaS band. The average annual discount is 24.4% and the median is 23%, which means roughly two to three months free is the normal commitment incentive in the category.

Discounting is strongest where users are most price-sensitive. Academic writing tools average a 38.5% annual discount and humanization, rewriting and proofreading tools average 38.8%, which suggests those segments fight churn and seasonal usage with heavier commitment incentives.

Enterprise pricing exists, but it is not the center of the category. About 40% of AI writing tools have an enterprise, team, custom, or contact-sales path, which means enterprise packaging is common enough to plan for but not mandatory for every tool.

The dominant upgrade trigger is simply running out of capacity. Around 90% of AI writing tools use usage volume, word limits, credits, requests, articles, or generations as an upgrade trigger, which confirms that the category monetizes output scale more than the abstract act of writing.

Questions on pricing AI writing tools

These are the questions we kept circling back to while building the dataset. They are the ones that matter if you're trying to understand what actually works in AI writing tools pricing, and what to copy if you're shipping your own.

What should be the pricing model for an AI writing tool?

The pricing model for an AI writing tool should be a recurring subscription with usage limits inside tiers, because roughly 90% of tools use volume, words, credits, requests, articles, or generations as the main upgrade trigger.

Recurring pricing is the structural default because AI writing tools need predictable revenue against recurring model costs. The market rarely sells pure pay-as-you-go access as the core model; it sells a subscription and then meters how much writing or workflow capacity the buyer gets.

The best pattern is low entry friction followed by controlled expansion. The median cheapest plan is only $19 per month, but the median highest public plan rises to $64 and the average highest public plan reaches $196.67.

That gap matters because it shows the category does not monetize the first signup very hard. It monetizes through higher usage, more seats, automation, premium workflows, and operational scale once the customer has proven value.

Hybrid models make the most sense when output costs or output volume are hard to predict. Article credits, word credits, workflow credits, chat messages, image credits, and bulk generation limits all let a vendor protect margins without forcing every user into enterprise pricing.

Team and enterprise layers should exist when the product is used inside marketing, sales, SEO, or agency workflows. About 40% of AI writing tools have an enterprise, team, custom, or contact-sales path, usually built around seats, API access, white-labeling, security, support, onboarding, or high-volume production.

The safest pricing architecture for an AI writing tool is therefore a low-to-mid-priced recurring plan, visible upgrade tiers based on usage and workflow depth, and a custom path only when buyers need scale, governance, or support.

Steal what works → $79

What price should be charged for an AI writing tool?

The price charged for an AI writing tool should usually start around $19 per month and expand toward $64 or higher, because the dataset's median cheapest plan is $19 and its median most expensive public plan is $64.

The overall category average can be misleading because the distribution has a long upper tail. After excluding one enterprise-like $750 entry outlier, the average cheapest plan is $29.34, but the median is much lower at $19.

That makes $19 the better anchor for a mainstream first paid plan. It is the point where users can evaluate the product without treating it like a serious procurement decision.

Workflow family changes the right price more than ambition does. Humanization, rewriting and proofreading tools have a $10 median entry price, creative writing tools sit around $13, writing assistants and productivity tools sit around $17, and general marketing content suites sit around $19.

Business-output workflows support higher entry prices. Email and outreach writing has a median entry price of $29, SEO and long-form content sits at $33.50, and ecommerce, ads and performance copy reaches a $79 median entry.

The same pattern becomes sharper at the top of the plan ladder. Humanization tools have a median top plan of $30, while SEO and long-form content has a median top plan of $199 and an average top plan of $792.80.

The practical rule is simple: price personal writing utilities near the category median, but use higher tiers when the tool is tied to revenue, search traffic, lead generation, ecommerce conversion, or scaled content operations.

Are people willing to pay a lot for an AI writing tool?

Yes, people are willing to pay a lot for an AI writing tool, but mostly when it supports business workflows, since 26.2% of tools publish a top plan above $99 and 14.6% publish one above $199.

The category's willingness to pay is not evenly distributed. The median highest public plan is $64, which means many AI writing tools still behave like individual or prosumer utilities.

The average highest public plan is $196.67, which tells a different story. A smaller group of products pulls the ceiling upward by selling SEO, content automation, outreach, ecommerce, ads, and GTM workflows.

SEO and long-form content is the clearest premium segment. Its average most expensive public plan is $792.80 and its median is $199, far above the overall median top plan of $64.

General marketing copy and content suites also show strong expansion headroom, with an average top plan of $223 even though the median is only $74. That spread suggests a few operational content platforms command much higher prices than simple copy generators.

Consumer-like categories have less pricing power. Humanization, rewriting and proofreading tools have a median top plan of $30, while academic tools have a median top plan of $28 despite some higher-priced exceptions.

So the answer is not that buyers will pay a lot for writing. They will pay a lot for volume, workflow integration, traffic, pipeline, conversion, governance, and content operations.

Should an AI writing tool launch with freemium, free trial or both?

An AI writing tool should usually launch with either a free plan or a short no-card trial, because 55.8% of tools offer a free plan and 52.4% offer a free trial.

Unlike many B2B SaaS categories, AI writing tools do not clearly choose trials over freemium. Free plans are slightly more common, which fits a market where users want to test output quality before trusting a tool with real writing work.

Free plans are not generous in practice. Among tools with a free plan, usage limits, credits, requests, words, generations, or daily caps appear in essentially 100% of cases.

That makes freemium a sampling mechanic, not a full product experience. The free user gets enough output to judge quality, but not enough volume to replace a paid workflow.

Trials are also tightly controlled. The estimated average free trial length is around seven days, the typical stated range is three to seven days, and the full observed range runs from one to twenty-one days.

Credit card requirements are not the norm. Among tools where the requirement is knowable, only 23.9% require a credit card for a free trial, which means card-free access is a reasonable default for new entrants.

The right choice depends on abuse risk and cost. Humanization, paraphrasing, and academic tools often rely on low-volume free plans, while higher-cost SEO, article, outreach, and automation tools can justify short trials or trial-like credits.

What should be the price of the first paid plan of an AI writing tool?

The first paid plan of an AI writing tool should usually sit between $10 and $29 per month, because the median entry price is $19 and 69.9% of tools start below $29.

The $29 threshold is the main psychological boundary in AI writing tools. Below it, the product still feels like an individual utility or low-risk prosumer tool.

Above $29, the product needs a clearer reason to exist. It should either save significant time, generate business output, include better models, offer workflow depth, or support a more valuable use case than generic writing.

The $79 threshold is even more meaningful. Since 83.5% of AI writing tools start below $79, a first paid plan at or above $79 puts the product above most comparable tools in the category.

A $99 entry plan is a deliberate premium move. Only about 4.9% of comparable tools start at or above $99, so that price needs strong evidence of ROI, data value, automation, or professional workflow replacement.

Workflow family should set the real anchor. Humanization tools can start around $10, academic and creative tools around $12 to $13, writing assistants around $17, marketing suites around $19, email and outreach around $29, SEO content around $33.50, and ecommerce or performance copy around $79.

The safest starting point for a broad AI writing tool is therefore $19 to $29. Going higher can work, but only when the buyer clearly sees business value before they compare the product to cheaper writing assistants.

What should the cheapest paid plan of an AI writing tool include?

The cheapest paid plan of an AI writing tool should include the core writing workflow plus meaningfully higher usage, because about 46% of tools use more words, credits, requests, generations, or unlimited usage as the first paid unlock.

The cheapest paid plan should not hide the product's main job. If the tool sells humanization, rewriting, essay drafting, fiction writing, email replies, product copy, or long-form content, the first paid plan needs to let the user do that job for real.

Volume is the most common unlock because it is easy to understand. Users know when they have run out of words, credits, requests, scans, articles, replies, or generations.

Advanced quality is the second layer, but it is less common than volume. Around 17% of tools use advanced models, premium tools, or better AI quality as a cheapest-plan unlock.

Workflow access appears after that. Around 10% of tools use export, publishing, integrations, API, or bulk workflow access as an early paid unlock, usually in more operational categories.

The exact inclusion should match the workflow. Humanization tools should increase word caps and detector checks, academic tools should unlock plagiarism checks, citations and exports, creative tools should increase credits and long-form capacity, and SEO tools should add articles, optimization reports, and publishing workflows.

The cheapest paid plan should feel like the first serious version of the product, not a slightly less frustrating free plan. Tight volume caps are acceptable; gating the core promise is not.

What should trigger upgrades for an AI writing tool?

The main upgrade trigger for an AI writing tool should be usage volume, because around 90% of tools use words, credits, requests, articles, generations, or similar capacity limits as an upgrade lever.

Usage volume works because it aligns pricing with the user's own sense of progress. A customer who writes more, rewrites more, publishes more, checks more, or generates more is easier to upgrade than one who merely wants a feature list.

Seat and collaboration expansion is the next major layer. Around 42% of AI writing tools use team seats, collaboration, agency or client usage, or sub-accounts as upgrade triggers.

Support and onboarding also matter, especially in business workflows. Around 32% of tools use priority support, onboarding, dedicated support, or account management as expansion levers.

Operational integrations are less common but more strategic. Around 23% of tools use API access, integrations, automation, bulk workflows, or publishing workflows to push buyers into higher plans.

Quality control can trigger upgrades in specific segments. Around 14% of tools use plagiarism, detection, humanization, or quality controls, which is especially relevant in academic, humanization, and editing categories.

Brand voice, tone, style, or governance appears in around 10% of tools, but it is strategically important for marketing teams. It turns a writing tool from a personal assistant into a company workflow asset.

Which features should stay for the most expensive plan of an AI writing tool?

The most expensive plan of an AI writing tool should reserve scale, collaboration, API or integration access, and support, because about 40% of tools have an enterprise, team, custom, or contact-sales path.

The top plan should not merely offer more of the same words. It should give high-volume users the operational pieces they need to run writing inside a team, agency, content operation, or business workflow.

API access belongs high in the ladder because it signals technical or automated usage. The same is true for integrations, bulk workflows, publishing workflows, and high-volume content production.

Team administration also belongs near the top. Seats, roles, workspaces, sub-accounts, client management, and collaboration features justify expansion better than slightly better copy templates.

Support and implementation are classic high-end packaging levers. Priority support, onboarding, dedicated account management, and custom review workflows appear repeatedly in enterprise descriptions because they reduce procurement and rollout risk.

Security, governance, and brand controls should be kept for business buyers when they exist. Brand voice, custom AI agents, knowledge bases, white-labeling, and compliance language make the most sense when a customer is paying for organizational consistency.

The most expensive plan should therefore be framed around operating scale, not writing quality alone. The market rarely sells quality by itself; it packages quality with limits, speed, models, governance, support, and workflow depth.

What should appear on the pricing page of an AI writing tool to increase conversion?

The pricing page of an AI writing tool should make the free access mechanic, monthly option, annual discount, usage limits, and upgrade path obvious, because 55.8% offer free plans, 52.4% offer trials, and the median annual discount is 23%.

The first conversion job is to reduce evaluation risk. AI writing buyers need to see whether they can try the product through a free plan, a free trial, free credits, limited actions, or a short trial-like quota.

The second job is to make limits legible. Because usage volume is the dominant upgrade trigger, the pricing page should clearly show words, credits, requests, articles, scans, replies, generations, or whatever the buyer will run out of.

Monthly billing should be visible because it is nearly universal in the dataset. Only 2.9% of tools lack a monthly option, so hiding monthly pricing creates friction unless the product has unusually strong proof or a low annual commitment.

The annual discount should sit close to the normal category band. The average annual discount is 24.4% and the median is 23%, so a two-months-free style offer reads familiar rather than desperate.

The page should also explain what gets better as buyers move up. Better models, more words, more credits, more seats, exports, integrations, API access, brand voice, and priority support are all easier to understand than vague premium language.

Some pricing-page metrics are not safely computable from the retained fields. Most-popular badge presence, promo-code visibility, money-back guarantees, and exact number of plans should be tracked in future datasets before treating them as category benchmarks.

What are other interesting things AI writing tools do regarding their pricing model?

Beyond the headline metrics, AI writing tools share a few quieter pricing patterns that explain why the category feels cheap at entry but still supports expensive expansion.

Annual-only pricing is rare in AI writing tools. Only 2.9% of tools lack a monthly option, which means buyers expect to start month-to-month unless the product is unusually niche, annualized, or service-like.

The strongest annual discounts appear in the cheapest, most price-sensitive segments. Humanization, rewriting and proofreading tools average 38.8% annual discounts, while academic writing tools average 38.5%, which points to churn risk, seasonal usage, and heavier price sensitivity.

Free access often blurs the line between freemium and trial. Many tools offer free credits, limited reports, limited words, one-time actions, or trial-like quotas rather than a clean time-boxed trial.

That matters because buyers experience the product through output, not screenshots. A small amount of free generation can be more persuasive than a long trial that does not include enough usable capacity.

General writing assistants face the most substitutability pressure. Their median entry pricing sits low, and their upgrade triggers often revolve around limits, models, storage, autocomplete, or daily requests rather than defensible business workflow depth.

Business-context categories escape that pressure more easily. SEO content, outreach, ecommerce copy, and GTM content automation can charge more because they attach writing to traffic, pipeline, conversion, or operational throughput.

Insights

We collected data and analyzed the pricing of 105 AI writing tools, decomposed each one into comparable dimensions, and ran the aggregates to understand what actually works in this category. Here are our most useful findings:

  • The AI writing tools market is not centered around $79 per month. It is centered around $19 per month, which means $79 is already a premium entry point rather than the default starting price.
  • Across AI writing tools, the average cheapest plan is $29.34 but the median is only $19. This gap matters because a small number of higher-entry products pull the average upward and make the market look more expensive than it feels to buyers.
  • A first paid plan above $29 needs a clear justification in AI writing tools. Almost 70% of tools start below $29, so charging more than that without workflow depth or business value creates immediate comparison pressure.
  • A $99 entry price is unusually high in AI writing tools. Only about 5% of tools start at or above that level, which means $99 should be reserved for products with obvious ROI, automation, data, or scale.
  • AI writing tools have a cheap-entry, steep-expansion shape. The median top public plan is $64, but the average is almost $197, which shows how a smaller group of tools monetizes serious business usage.
  • SEO and long-form content tools are structurally more expensive than generic AI writing tools. Their top-plan median reaches $199 because the buyer is paying for traffic, ranking, revenue, and production scale rather than generic text generation.
  • Humanization and paraphrasing tools are the cheapest segment of AI writing tools. Their median entry price is only $10, which suggests they compete mostly on price, word volume, and detector access rather than workflow depth.
  • Academic AI writing tools look cheap at entry but discount aggressively on annual plans. That pattern suggests seasonal demand, high churn risk, and price-sensitive users who need stronger incentives to commit.
  • Creative writing tools occupy the middle ground in AI writing tools. They are cheap enough for individuals, but their expansion paths rely on credits, longer manuscripts, exports, story bibles, and creative capacity.
  • Email and outreach AI writing tools can charge more than general writing assistants. They connect writing directly to revenue productivity, which gives buyers a clearer reason to accept higher monthly pricing.
  • Usage limits are the dominant monetization mechanic across AI writing tools. The most common upgrade trigger is not advanced functionality; it is simply running out of words, credits, requests, articles, or generations.
  • Free access in AI writing tools is a controlled sample, not a generosity signal. Free plans almost always restrict usage, which lets buyers test output quality without giving away enough capacity to replace paid usage.
  • Free plans in AI writing tools rarely include meaningful team workflows. Collaboration, priority support, storage, document scale, and operational features tend to appear only after the product proves individual value.
  • Advanced models are useful but not the main pricing lever in AI writing tools. Buyers upgrade more often because they need more capacity, more workflow depth, or more business context than because quality alone is advertised.
  • API access usually belongs in advanced or enterprise packaging for AI writing tools. It signals automation, technical integration, and higher usage intensity, which makes it more defensible than gating basic templates.
  • Brand voice is strategically important but not always a first-tier feature in AI writing tools. When included in higher plans, it helps reposition the product from a personal writing assistant to a team-wide content system.
  • The cheapest AI writing tool categories also use the heaviest annual discounts. Humanization, paraphrasing, and academic writing products lean on large discounts because their users are more price-sensitive and more likely to churn.
  • A 20% to 25% annual discount is the normal band for AI writing tools. Discounts far above that can work in consumer-like segments, but they risk looking promotional in more B2B-oriented workflows.
  • Enterprise pricing in AI writing tools is usually about governance and scale rather than more AI output. Custom pricing, seats, admin controls, API access, white-labeling, security, onboarding, and support do most of the enterprise work.
  • The most resilient AI writing tools combine three expansion levers. Usage volume, collaboration, and advanced workflow features together create a stronger pricing ladder than any one lever alone.
  • The clearest pattern across AI writing tools is that the category does not monetize writing itself very well. It monetizes volume, workflow integration, business context, and operational scale.

Methodology

We analyzed 105 AI writing and content tools based on their public pricing information. Each product was reduced to comparable pricing dimensions: name, primary workflow, pricing model, cheapest monthly plan price, most expensive monthly plan price, free plan availability, free trial availability, credit card requirement, monthly billing option, annual discount, enterprise or custom pricing availability, free plan limitations, paid plan unlocks, and upgrade triggers. All percentages and aggregates throughout the analysis are computed from the same retained dataset, with unclear or non-comparable values excluded only from the specific calculation where they cannot be safely interpreted.

We define AI writing tools as software whose primary value proposition is to help users generate, rewrite, edit, improve, summarize, expand, structure, translate, personalize, or polish written content using AI. This includes blog posts, marketing copy, emails, documents, scripts, social posts, essays, product descriptions, and business writing. We exclude generic chatbots, SEO content tools, grammar checkers, document editors, email marketing tools, social media tools, note-taking tools, translation tools, and content management platforms unless AI-powered writing or editing is a central advertised feature. For ambiguous tools, we include them only when users would reasonably describe the product as an AI writing tool rather than a broader chatbot, content platform, SEO tool, or productivity tool.

The dataset focuses on tools that are sufficiently comparable for pricing analysis. Products were retained when they had a recognizable AI writing, content generation, rewriting, editing, SEO content, or content workflow use case and enough public pricing information to support at least part of the analysis. A small number of ambiguous, missing, or structurally atypical values were excluded from specific calculations where including them would distort the result. For example, when a tool only showed “on request” pricing, it was excluded from price averages but could still be counted for enterprise or custom-pricing availability.

Where annual pricing was the default display, prices were converted into effective monthly equivalents where possible. Where pricing used approximate values, promotional language, or rounded currency conversions, we treated the value as directional and included it only when it remained comparable to the rest of the dataset. Where a tool showed an enterprise-like entry point rather than a normal self-serve SaaS starting price, that row was excluded from entry-price averages to avoid overstating the market norm. Denominators therefore vary across metrics: each calculation uses the largest reliable subset of rows for that specific metric.

Because AI writing products often combine subscriptions, usage credits, word limits, seats, trials, free plans, and custom enterprise packaging, the analysis emphasizes both numeric pricing and packaging logic. Quantitative metrics such as averages, medians, thresholds, and discount rates are paired with qualitative pattern analysis around free-plan limits, paid-plan unlocks, upgrade triggers, and enterprise features. This makes the analysis useful not only for benchmarking prices, but also for understanding how tools in the category structure conversion, expansion, and monetization.
